It's Art Over Story Here

Much more interesting for the art work and coloring than the story itself; don't know if the Dr. will ever get his due as far as storylines go but this is worth picking up and studying the artwork a few times once you've read over the plot.

Doctor is more important than Strange.

Brian Vaughn's offbeat humor plays well in this Doctor Strange miniseries. With Strange wounded and Wong sick Midnight Nurse joins them to track down a treatment for Wong's ailment. The story is long on medical and insurance jokes that are truly funny; even superheros need insurance. Of course no Doctor Strange story would be complete without a grave moral choice in the third act. While you can see the ending coming an issue before it happens, it is sill satisfying and true to Strange's style. . The art is good, not the best Doctor Strange you'll see but still bight and vibrant. While this is perhaps a bit short it is still a fun adventure comedy.

On the precipice of annihilation

Having just finished reading "The Last Campaign" by Thurston Clarke about RFK's 1968 presidential campaign, I decided to read "Thirteen Days". I bought some other books about the Cuban Missile Crisis, but wanted RFK's memoir and perspective about the situation before reading more current historical accounts.

The first item that is a resonant theme forty years later is the ability of JFK to surround himself with diverse points of view and weigh all approaches to this stand-off before ultimately making his decision. This is in remarkable contrast with the current administration of George W Bush. However, RFK outlines the difficulty of individuals to even be honest with a President and the process that the select innner circle of military and civilian people went through -- no holds barred sessions without the JFK present -- that enabled them to outline the various options for him to consider.

The second item that struck me was the simplicity of this memoir. RFK did not go into exhaustive detail, but gave enough "insider" perspective to (1) make people realize how close we were to the brink of world destruction, (2) outline the calm and collected approach of the JFK in the face of such esacalating tension.

Why only a four? As with any memoir, there are certainly alternative perspectives that clearly don't get represented and covered objectively given the writer's bias and interest. For instance, historical records have shown that Kennedy did agree to remove missiles from Turkey as part of the negotiations with Khruschev -- even though this was delayed in order to ensure that there was no appearance of a quid pro quo. This does not diminish the value and perspective of "Thirteen Days", just reflects my opinion that it doesn't represent the definitive account of the Cuban Missile Crisis, but does provide the clearest inside picture of two weeks that the world came closest to nuclear annihilation during the Cold War.

A Great series of biographies

This is an excellent series of biographies for children. Full of interesting facts, easy and enjoyable to read, and great for whetting the appetite to read further. It is just a pity that there isn't a UK equivalent series, I can think of lots more people that it would be nice to read about. The whole format is very attractive and the books bring the people to life. My grandchildren, ranging fro 8 to 11 all love them, and so do I !!!

About the Author
Michael M. Cox is Assistant Chair, Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his B.A. in Biology from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Brandeis University. Cox's current research activity involves studies of the mechanism of action of proteins involved in genetic recombination. This work is focused on the bacterial RecA protein, the bacterial RecF, RecO, RecR, RecG, RuvA, and RuvB proteins, the yeast Rad 51 protein, and more broadly on the mechanism of the recombinational DNA repair of stalled replication forks. Jennifer A. Doudna grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she became interested in chemistry and biochemistry during her high school years. She is currently Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She received her B.A. in biochemistry from Pomona College and her Ph.D. from Harvard University, working in the laboratory of Jack Szostak, with whom she also did postdoctoral research. Michael O'Donnell received his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, where he worked under Charles Williams Jr. on electron transfer in the flavoprotein thioredoxin reductase. He performed postdoctoral work on E. coli replication with Arthur Kornberg and then on herpes simplex virus replication with I. Robert Lehman, both in the biochemistry department at Stanford University. O'Donnell then became a member of the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College in 1986 and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1992 before moving to The Rockefeller University in 1996. O'Donnell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
