Great practice

The extra practice was just what I needed to gain confidence using the past tense. There are clear explanations with exercises and an answer key. They say repetition is the key with any language and this book gave me that additional practice.

pretty good but a little too minimalist

I overall like this book but I think it is just a little too condensed and could use more practice exercises, maybe more like the French verb workbook by Chamberlain that I also reviewed. For example, I felt that the section on pronominal verbs with the past perfect (chapter one) should have had more practice problems and maybe been a little more fleshed out because it is a very complex topic with a lot of 'in this case do this except for when this is the case' type scenarios. The French verb workbook by Chamberlain does a much better job explaining this.

It was a little annoying to find that exercise 3.5 asks the learner to do problems using the simple past--never mind the fact that the simple past is not taught until chapter five. It is pretty bizarre how many truly bad book editors are out there. How does one explain that? It is like all the smart people went into the hard sciences and the humanities got whomever was leftover or something. It would be nice to read a book without finding all sorts of mistakes for a change.

I am not enjoying this workbook as much as Chamberlain's verb workbook but it is good extra practice. I am using both at once and they are reinforcing each other.

Great 4 a lesson

I teach first grade. This book was perfect for teaching the importance of honesty. After I have read the book to my students, its one of the class favorites. Additionally, it's so easy to reference and reinforce the idea throughout the year.

If dreams could come true...

OK, we have another compromise situation. But in this case it is not because Mrs. Bennet walked in on them while Darcy was whispering in Elizabeth's ear. Nor is it a situation where Mr. Bennet has died and Darcy offers to provide for the family financially IF Elizabeth will agree to marry him. Furthermore it is not one in which Darcy offers for Elizabeth to cover up Georgiana's actions at Ramsgate.

This is a situation in which Darcy CANNOT get Elizabeth out of his head nor his dreams after she has refused him at Hunsford. And he allows his dreams to be played out as he returns to Pemberley and once again daydreams of his wife, Elizabeth, greeting him with open affection. He has to reward her with a kiss... and she returns his kiss...BUT then she calls him, "Mr. Darcy." He wakes up! Dreams don't have an unknown couple and Pemberley servants witnessing their affection with startled looks. Yes, they must marry. But have Elizabeth's feelings changed?

What is different here is Mr. Bennet's reaction. Now you have to be aware that while the Gardiners were touring Pemberley with Elizabeth, Wickham and Lydia were running away from Brighton to London, not Gretna Green. So when Mr. Bennet is made aware of Lydia's actions and how she MUST now be forced to marry he vows that no other daughter will ever be forced to marry a man. So you can imagine what he says when the man he knows Elizabeth hates asks for his permission to marry Elizabeth and explains the compromise.

This story is mostly as expected from canon. However whereas in many stories Bingley's and Jane's story is all smooth running waters in this story we see a Bingley as a man who has secrets and a Jane who learns of them by eavesdropping. You know what they say about eavesdropping?

There was a literary device in Chapters 7 and 9 where in the first line of certain sections we read, "Mr. Bennet was confused.", then, "Mrs. Bennet was confused." and further along "Elizabeth was confused." Later it is, "Lydia was relieved, Wickham was relieved, Kitty...Mary...Mr. Bennet...Mrs. Bennet...Mr. Darcy...Elizabeth...Jane was relieved." I found that a charming device but then I am a simple creature.

And I enjoyed immensely the descriptions of Lydia's pouting when Elizabeth engagement is announced during Mr. and Mrs. Wickham's short visit to Longbourn on their way to New Castle. Lydia is not happy when her place at the center of attention is usurped by Elizabeth. Oh, and you will so enjoy the little story about Caroline in the epilogue.

This was a short and sweet read which I completed in an afternoon. It is for all those who can't get enough of ODC.

Worth the wait

This was such a wonderful story. Surprisingly the angst was not due to the main couple but another well-known couple. This made the familiar new and different. All characters were true to canon in my opinion and of course all is resolved satisfactorily with the epilogue providing excellent closure.

Yes, Darcy had dreams. And the dreams of Elizabeth being his wife were crushed at Huntsford Parsonage. Those dreams, once precious, then became his worst nightmare. Every night he was subjected to just what his behavior had cost him as she came to him while he slept and then left with the morning sun.

This was a delightful story of what happens when the mist between our dreams and the real world is suddenly lifted and we are presented with a new reality. Darcy awoke from the dream where his beautiful wife Elizabeth welcomed him home with a kiss, to the reality of his holding the Miss Elizabeth Bennet in a passionate kiss and embrace. OOPS!!! Compromise... half the gardening staff stood amazed as they witnessed their master kissing a visitor on the Pemberley tour. Uncle and Aunt Gardiner quickly realized there was definitely something between their niece and the Master of Pemberley.

Well, our canon story changed from this point on and things certainly began to happen. We go along the same trail; however, circumstances changed. We, as lovers of P&P canon, know that as soon as Elizabeth returns to the Inn, letters are waiting for her from Jane regarding Lydia. Only this time Georgiana was with Darcy when he walked in on Elizabeth’s distress. She was able to mediate their confusion and clear up their misunderstanding from canon. [Elizabeth, thinking he only wanted to be away from her and would never see him again. Darcy, thinking of ways to find the couple and needing to leave quickly so he could go after them.] Georgiana was pretty cool in this variation.

Wickham was such a sleaze and what happened to him was our dream fulfilled. Even the servants agreed. Lydia, was such a spoiled brat and did not deserve such a fate simply because she was too silly to realize the reality check she was about to receive. That is, if she ever grew up enough to understand. It was always someone else’s fault, all attention belonged solely to her, she pouted when denied the desire of her heart, and she had no qualms in asking for funds from her much richer sisters. Her sole desire was to marry first, before all her sisters, so she could step ahead of them as a married woman. Will she ever realize that she threw away her chance at a real life…a better life? Had she but waited, but then that is the rub, Lydia never waited for anything. Mrs. Bennet will you ever realize what you created in your favorite child?

Bingley…oooooh, that man. I have never seen his behavior like this before and was stunned. The end result was hilarious and I could not stop laughing. You will have to wait for it, but it was worth it. As was the epilogue with Caroline Bingley. Oh, poor thing; bless her heart. The twist and big reveal was too good. I loved it. I never saw it coming and it was one of those OMG moments.

I have a 100 + years old house with the original windows. They have a section on Tuning Up Old Windows which I found very helpful. There are only a few pages on this subject for old windows. The information is straight forward and to the point.

Fantastic Discussion of the Physiology of Drumming

In this book, John Lamb shows his understanding of drumming-- and physiology-- from an amazingly adept perspective. It will change-- and improve-- the way you think about drumming, being a drummer, and physical movement in general. It inspired me to pursue my Alexander Technique classes as well as reconsider the ways I move in the world, not just via drumming. John Lamb is a very smart, very well-educated, and very interesting teacher and person. If you read this book, you will learn what he teaches in his own classes. His is a fabulous methodology to pursue.

when I inherited my son's drum kit and decided to learn drums to develop a better rhythmic feel

Given the number of drum books available, this was the only one that I found that addresses the anatomy and body mechanics of drumming.
Meanwhile, there are many books available for the piano that breaks down the physiology for piano playing. I'm a late drummer, though a trained musician, when I inherited my son's drum kit and decided to learn drums to develop a better rhythmic feel, and ended up enjoying the drums a lot more. For the best results, this is not a casual beach reading book. I needed to read, analyze and try to apply the various sections to my drum playing. For the beginner player, I would also check out John Lamb's "Start Playing the Drums"

Learn to move BEFORE you groove

I'm 44 and the self-inflicted victim of spending 25 years behind a desk. You'd think I'd be pretty good and sitting down, right? Wrong! Turns out, when you're learning to drum, there's a lot more opportunity to screw up your body through repetitive strain and bad form than you'd think. My son has a drum set that I've taken a shine to, but I was finding that after about 10-15 minutes, my back, neck, and arms would start to ache, sometimes for hours after I stopped. Not surprisingly, this impacted my practice and my ability to progress.

Lamb's Anatomy of Drumming is full of fascinating facts and recommendations about the body and how to improve drumming form. For example, I've always had a hard time sitting comfortably for long periods, especially on hard chairs. Then, on page 64, I discovered that "on 10%-15% of people, however, the bottom of the sit bones are pointy." Well, that actually makes sense for me! Now I know the problem and what I can do about it.

There are a million ways to learn how to do something you love wrong. If you love drumming, or even want to dabble with getting started, do yourself a favor. Don't hurt yourself. Learn to drum so that you feel comfortable and free by buying this book. Your future progress will thank you.

An amazing read

This book is a brilliant piece of writing and coming from someone so young, a great portent for the future. The writer is no mere traveller breezing through places in a superficial way and make pronouncements with the thinnest veneer of knowledge to guide her. Her writing has scholarly depth, shows great curiosity and wonderful impartiality as she wends her way through the Indus and Sindh, encountering various sects and peoples, and giving each side an equal say. We see flashes of the writer's droll sense of humor mixed in with genuine observation as in the instance when a Pakistani official complements her on her beautiful Urdu and across the border in India a Customs official hearing the same language, praises her "amazing Hindi."

In the first few chapters I thought that the writer's research, coupled with her contacts in Pakistan, were what made the writing thick with detail. A quarter of the way through the book it occurred to me that the reason why the work has depth is because Ms. Albinia speaks both Urdu and Hindi and what a world of a difference that makes. She is able to communicate with people from every level of society, from the feudal landlord to the peasants of Sindh, each of whom impart their own history. Her portrait of the Sheedis reveals a timeless people excluded from the knowledge of most Sindhis. Ms. Albinia never passes sniffy judgements on poverty or morality, but gracefully melds into a succession of households, high and low, treating each with respect and affection. Her stay in Afghanistan is negotiated with astounding grace and a sure footed understanding of genuine cross cultural communication. A quite remarkable thing indeed.

Ms. Albinia's portrait of the Indus and it's history shows very clearly that for hundreds of years Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam accommodated each other's perspective and lived in harmony. Her exposition of the various saints' 'urs' and the piety of the devotees shows what an enduring grip Sufi Islam has not only in Sindh, but in every province of Pakistan. The followers of Sufi Islam believe in a kinder, gentler Islam that treats all of creation with respect and humility and completely disavow the smash and grab violence of the Wahhabi perspective. This book should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the current conundrums of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Interesting Historical Tidbits mixed with Travel Narrative

This book is as much about Pakistani culture as it is about the Indus river. The author journeys upstream along the Indus River, devoting a chapter to each of the significant historical movements in the river's history.

I enjoyed gleaning bits of history about the province of Sindh, the water-god Uderolal, the relationships between various classes of Pakistan, etc. especially since my ancestors are from Sindh. And yet, though the writing is good and the subject interesting, I found it tough going at times. I think this is because this book is torn between being history as well as a travel narrative.

Some of the chapters are much more coherent and cohesive than others. For example, the final chapter is among the best writing in the book. She describes her travel in Tibet and her travel companions with such clarity that the experiences really come alive.

The first couple of chapters -- about modern day Sindh and Pakistani society -- are also very good, and I enjoyed the information about Mohenjodaro. It made me want to read a book devoted to that subject entirely. This is the beauty of reading a book with such a vast range -- it gives you a taste of things so you can explore items of interest in greater detail elsewhere.

The author also enlightened me on the importance of a river in an agricultural society and how dams impact the societies along a river.

I recommend this book if you are interested in Pakistani or Indian culture. And if you are fascinated with rivers and their impact on societies, you will love this book.

I think the writer will mature and I look forward to her future works.

The Future Of Travel Writing

Alice Albinia's "Empires Of The Indus" is a grand travelogue that actually served as my introduction into travel writing. The author provides a synthesis of the world of the Indus River, fusing academic writing and adept, intuitive and observant depictions of the people and places therein. In some cases, Albinia's writing serves as one of the latest (so far, at least) published records of a westerner visiting sites such as that of the Bamiyan Buddhas, while in others her writing is so vivid and packed with detail and realism that one almost feels they are part of a film crew following the author, especially towards the end of the novel, in Tibet.

Albinia seems to have a tendency to find herself in dangerous situations and seedy locations along the Indus - she is a brave traveller who hides her fear in some cases extraordinarily well (her life depends on it!) In fact, I may go so far as to say that her travels are all the more impressive given notions of sex and gender in Central Asia. Speaking fluent Urdu, she often has no problem finding guides and help, although the reader is always reminded how dangerous this trip is. Only an academic writer, or even a storyteller, can appreciate the organizational and research skills necessary to pull this off successfully. More than a standard travelogue, "Empires Of The Indus" provides an environmental message by illustrating the hazards of water management, while simultaneously providing a solid, well written history that can be appreciated by casual readers, Asian historians, and Islamic and Near Eastern historians/anthropologists, environmental historians, or even comparative world historians. Rory Stewart, author of "The Places In Between", hails Albinia as the greatest travel writer of our time, and he may very well be right (although Stewart is no slouch, either.) I, for one, will be there if Albinia writes another book.

About the Author
Ed Miller grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received an S.B. in Physics and another in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT in 2000. After a year teaching, he moved to Redmond, Washington to work as a software developer for Microsoft.

Looking for a new hobby, he deposited a couple hundred dollars in November 2001 to play $1-$2 and $2-$4 hold 'em online. After losing his initial stake, he sought to improve his game, and he found the books and website of Two Plus Two Publishing LLC. He participated in discussions on the forums at Twoplustwo.com, and after a few months he turned his losses into wins in a $4-$8 game at a local cardroom.

By January 2003, he had moved up to $10-$20 and $20-$40, and in March he left his job to play poker full-time. By then he had swapped roles on the online discussion forums from beginning player seeking advice to expert player giving it. After six more successful months playing in the Seattle area, he moved to Las Vegas, where he currently resides. Also in 2003, Dr. Alan Schoonmaker, the author of The Psychology of Poker, introduced Ed to David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth, and a partnership soon was born.

Today Ed usually plays between $10-$20 and $30-$60, but he can occasionally still be found in the $2-$4 to $6-$12 games around Las Vegas.

The Beginner's Hold'em Book You Want!

Today is June 1st of 2009, so i have a solid two months of hold'em experience behind me! Just wanted to play pool, but they finally got me off the bar stool into a game of hold'em at Johnny's Bar. I was hooked by the very first game which of course, i lost. At the bar, i would ask one of the old timers for advice, which was typically "play every ace" or "play every A,K,Q,J" or even "play every hand to the flop, any hand can win". We even have a kid (relative to my age) who is in fact a professional hold'em dealer at a local South Florida casino who advised me that a hand being suited doesn't add much value to the hand, so an Ace-7 off-suit is just as playable as an Ace-7 suited. I believed him, that is until i read "Hand Five - Two Off The Button", "Are You Suited?" wherein we learn that being suited is a SIGNIFICANT advantage!

Don't listen to card dealers, their game generally stinks because their knowledge of poker theory is non-existent. The old timers mean well, but they only know what they know, as they have never read a single book on hold'em. Just trust me on this one.

Now my hold'em library presently holds 17 books from amazon.com and I have perused at least one chapter from each, but the 1 book that has done me the greatest good for my budding hold'em side income career would be Ed Miller's "Getting Started in Hold'em". Ed presents the fundamental theories of poker in such a clear way as to be accessible to the beginning adult player. And that's what i like the most about Ed.

He does not talk down, nor dangerously oversimplify, towards the beginner. He tells you what you fundamentally need to know with straight talk,(if books could talk) no nonsense prose. I used to struggle with pre-flop hand selection, but after reading just one single previously mentioned chapter, i can now go into battle knowing that the "ONLY profitable unsuited and unpaired hands to play are AK,AQ,AJ,KQ and in favorable situations AT and KJ." However! "If someone raises in front of you, the situation is very unfavorable, and you should play only AK."

Well that simplifies things a whole bunch! Now we now know how to manage an entire class of hands, namely the unsuited and unpaired class.
We play only those unpaired, unsuited hands that Ed advises and anything else in this class can be considered an unprofitable hand, so we fold.

So here is my "University Of Texas Hold'em" class schedule:

Read Chapter 1 of "Getting Started" Ed Miller, a noted poker authority.
Read Chapter 1 of "No Limit Hold'em Theory and Practice" Miller/Sklansky
Read Chapter 1 of "Harrington on Cash Games Volume 1" Dan Harrington

"Read chapter 1" means means read & meditate upon the idea(s) presented.
Then, go online with play money and practice the concept(s) that you are learning. I like to spend the entire day contemplating a single chapter.

I also find it helpful and sometimes necessary to draw a large oval (the table) on a sheet of paper and place a circle around the "D","SB","BB" and create a circle (seat) for all the other players as well. Then place an "X" inside the circle for those that have folded and other info above each seat as needed to designate the action, such as "call $1", and so on. This way, you can easily resume the action that you will have entirely forgotten after Ed has finished coaching you on your hand! "and so you raise..."

The next day, go to the 2nd book (Theory & Practice) and do the same.
The third day is spent with Dan Harrington, another marvel of clarity.

Now i repeat this "round robin" for chapter 2 of each book.

This just works well for me, but if you prefer the traditional "cover to cover" method, then stay with that.

Conclusion: Ed Miller's Getting Started in Hold'em is the most excellent beginner's book available. I love this book for both the clarity and depth of content. Heck, just reading any one chapter of this book will make you a better player! I plan to re-read this book once a year to stay grounded with fundamental theory. Thanks Ed! Fantastic book!

Observation: Many people think that they are advanced amateurs at poker,
and many that think this have never read a book on hold'em! Amazing!

I would venture that there are 9 levels, namely: Beginning Beginner, Intermediate Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Beginning Amateur, Intermediate Amateur, Advanced Amateur (sounds like band class! Yes?) and finally Beginning Professional, Intermediate Pro & Advanced Pro's such as Ed Miller, Dan Harrington & Daniel Negreanu and pretty much anyone that makes it to the "Final Table" or those whose names we don't know, but can earn a decent side income playing cash games.

If those of us whom are in fact beginners would like to become intermediate beginners, and then advanced beginners, then Ed Miller is the answer!

GSHE is the perfect book to begin learning about Texas Hold 'em. It covers limit and no-limit ring games, and various tournament formats. It gives you a really solid base of knowledge, that will steady out your game and allow you to move on to the next level.
