About the Author
Catherine Winder is a veteran animation producer and creative executive who is currently President and Executive Producer of Rainmaker Entertainment, one of Canada's largest producers of CG animation. Winder was most recently at Lucasfilm Animation where as Executive Producer she set up the studio and produced the feature film and television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She has worked with many of the industry's major entertainment companies including Fox Feature Animation, Blue Sky Studios, HBO, Warner Bros., MTV, Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Cartoon Network and Disney.
Zahra Dowlatabadi is an award-winning animation producer and a consultant based in Los Angeles. Dowlatabadi has worked with many major studios including Disney, Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, and Universal Cartoon Studios in addition to collaborating with numerous internationally acclaimed animation studios and talent.
Tracey Miller-Zarneke earned her production experience on the feature films Chicken Little and The Emperor's New Groove and has gained a unique perspective on the industry by having authored five books on the art of animation, including those for DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon, Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Disney's Meet the Robinsons.

This book is the MISSING LINK

I've only recently come to the world of animation, and have devoured nearly every book on the subject, most of which have focused on the "how-to's" of drawing, etc.

But, I've haven't found anything that says, "Ok, so once you decide that you're going to create an animated film, and have your production tools and story in hand, here's how you make it happen." Until now. "Producing Animation" is the missing link in the evolution of books on the topic.

Other reviewers, most of them apparently animators and other creatives, take issue with the book's emphasis on production management and the life-long battle of the "creatives" vs. "the suits." I can completely understand that argument, and have seen it first hand in the live action film and television business. It's always been there, and it isn't about to change anytime soon.

What I found valuable about this book however, I found from the standpoint of someone who wants to be a one-man animation studio. Someone who is simultaneously the writer, the animator, the designer, as well as the director and producer. If I have any quarrels with management, I'll be quarreling with myself. (I'm the guy in the corner muttering to himself. Just leave me be, I'll be done in a minute :

For me, the valuable information here was in the practical how-to's of production and scheduling, the generous use of charts and forms, and the chapter on distribution and licensing. While some of it was much more applicable to a corporate environment where you have a team of managers supervising a team of animators, it still gave me a perspective on how to run an efficient production cycle, even if I'm the only one doing it.

I have no allusions of being the next Disney or Pixar, but I do have plans to produce quality animation now that the tools for doing so have created a level playing field for all who are interested in the art, and not just the big guys with the big bucks.

I consider this book a valuable tool for anyone who's either interested in hands-on animation production, or in the inner-workings of the business process.

Essential. PRODUCING ANIMATION, 2nd. Ed.: A Critical Review

A little less than a year ago, someone had written a book about working as a producer or working toward being a producer. My feeling then, as well as now, that there was very little substance.

Much of what I felt was missing is present in this book, PRODUCING ANIMATION. And, I think there's an easy distinction to be made and why this book is invaluable. A producer or anyone involved in "production" has the intimate responsibility of supplying funds, capital and/ or the talent. A producing agent does NOT tell (or shouldn't) the director or the artist how to employ their skill.

Inside this book as in these titles Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition and The Complete Film Production Handbook, Fourth Edition, you have an explicit and comprehensive breakdown of a producing agents' responsibility. And, the distinction between this book and the other two books is that this book has several indispensable chapters on producing 2D and 3D films.

Brilliant! Informative and useful!

I highly recommend this book!

"Producing Animation" is a must read for anyone who is involved with or contemplating working in the production side of animation. The book covers the spectrum from the small, one-off animator through someone actively working on large scale projects in the industry.

"Producing Animation" is written in an informative way with many examples and a few case studies that illustrate the points that the book makes. The style is conversational.

The book is liberally illustrated with pictures, diagrams, and visual aids to support the words.

It is also beautifully produced. The layout, the editing, and the content are exceptional.

This is the best book on animation production that I have ever read.

Flintknapping "The art of Making Stone Tools" By Paul Hellweg

My son already had this book and showed my husband and I some of the arrowheads he had made from raw Obsidian. He gave my husband some of the raw glass-like stones and loaned him the book. That's when I found the book on-line at Amazon. I ordered the book for him and one for myself. It is the most informative compilation of this art that i've ever seen.

Of course it has other tools you can make, stone knives with antler handles, rawhide wrapped axes, spearheads, hammers etc. It gives you pride to make tools yourself that you can use and show to your friends and family. I have seen arrowheads in museums that were found by archaeologists, and often wondered how they had been made. This book has all the answers for a beginner to get started and more. How to do the flaking, and the safety aspects of the glass shards from the flaking.

There is so much to learn from the pages of this book. It is also very reasonably priced, but worth so much more. We want to thank the author for this amazing book and also many thanks to Amazon for having the book available and all the other books i've ordered from you.

This book is a paperback with a limited number of pages. It is a great book to carry along with you when looking for workable flintknapping materials. The book gives concise instructions on making arrowheads, dart points, and spear points. Photos and drawings are done in black and white.

This book explains the techniques clearly and have accompanying photos. The author freely admits that it is better to learn in person, but if that isn't available (and it isn't in a lot of areas of the country), then this book can be very helpful. He stresses that knapping skills don't come in an afternoon's time, but that it takes a minimum of 200 hours or so of knapping to learn the feel and characteristics of stone.

What is a book...

Great art, while it not not contain the complete works of any one game it offers a nice variety of all 3 games. I wish it contained any of the in-game bestiary or character profiles that Jorge Benedito drew, that in itself could fill its own book. Not even Kojima herself drew every monster and character in game. Definitely for anyone whos a fan of the series, old or new.

Beautiful art book of all three games

Strong and sturdy with gorgeous high quality pages depicting concept art from Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate, and Lords of Shadow 2. Also shows scenes from Mirror of Fate in early storyboards, which is always very interesting to see.

Wonderful collectible piece for any diehard Castlevania fan and an amazing asset for any prospective concept artists out there.

Great artbook

I purchased this for a friend but had to page through it first to verify it's quality.

The content covers the first Lord of Shadow game very extensively. The backstory summations of important characters alongside many illustrations give the book a very cohesive and useful tone for fans. It also covers the new sequel to Lords of Shadow but its more of a late addition compared to the breadth of content about the first game.

If you're a fan that enjoyed the art of the series it is easy to recommend purchasing it.

A nice children's picture book, NOT by Papini.

This is a nice, large print CHILDREN'S picture book, about the life of Christ, with no single author credited. It is a British edition, in no way connected to anything Giovanni Papini wrote. Papini's is a 450 page novelized biography of Christ, with no illustrations, decidedly for an adult audience, translated into English from Italian in 1923. The above title, as nice as it is, is listed incorrectly, and has nothing to do with Papini or his novel, and should be listed as a children's book.

The Life of Chirst

This book is old 1920's but is very poetic and puts into terms we can readily understand what Christ did for us. The Nativity is very moving and is always a holiday addition to our celebrations. For those that appreciate the holiday for the true meaning it is a moving explanation of the birth in the stable.

This book travels through the time that Christ was present in this world. It is a thought-provoking book, the language is beautiful and descriptive. I suggest spending the money for the copy to add to your library.

Finally Found What I'd Been Looking For

I remember purchasing this title about some twenty years ago. As i read the book i was amazed by the truthfulness of its author. He wrote with such clarity and unbiased words. I awe-struck and enjoyed every page written...that was some twenty
years ago. To date, i am still awe-struck as i read this precious copy of what i
throught was a lost book and forgotten author..but i was again blessed by my faith
in God as He opened up a door for me to receive this copy of such a well written and
marvelous story of the Life of Christ.i beleive that every student of biblical studies and pastor of various congregations should have such a book in his or her
library...a treasure that will last for sometime in the hearts and minds of its readers. it has the power of the holy spirit of move beyond one's often closed mind-set and allow them to enter into the reality of the birth of Christ and the first place he laid...in a manager.....one that we often never attribute to his laying nor the very environment that he was born in. from the striking reality of his environmental birth place, to the richness of his death on the cross, to the human touch into the lives of so many of his Father's creation in human-kind. this book
has found a forever place in my heart and among the many books of my blessed library. how i am glad that i finally found, by faith and pray, what i had sought God for, for so many years. thank amazonbooks...more so thank u Father.

A very weak product with a lot of fanfare!

I purchased this book with high hopes but was very disappointed. I should clarify that the book, while very simplistic, is pretty good at listing and describing the "10 Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs." It is a good list and the descriptions are very clear and helpful. When I went online to take the assessment, I was very disappointed in the reporting provided after completing the assessment. The book and website clearly state that knowing both the traits that you possess and the intensity with which you possess them is an important component of identifying your entrepreneurial talents. The report is merely a listing, in order, of the 10 traits based on your answers. The implication is that everyone possess the 10 traits and that you should focus on the top four. Unfortunately, there is no indication of a "score" or the level to which you possess the traits. So, a person who has no real potential for entrepreneurship will get the same report as a successful serial entrepreneur. In fact, these two people could potentially receive the same report with the same traits listed in order. I guess they might have some different bullet points as their "action plan" but there are only three bullet point descriptions and then four "action plan items" which are very generic. I am having a very difficult time finding any value in this assessment for truly identifying the presence and level of the 10 entrepreneurial traits from which a person would work through their decision to become (or not) an entrepreneur. It was not a complete waste of $15 but close.

Shiny New Object Syndrome

"If you double the number of experiments you do per year, you're going to double your inventiveness. The thing about inventing is you have to be both stubborn and flexible, more or less simultaneously. If you're not stubborn, you'll give up on experiments too soon. And if you're not flexible, you'll pound your head against the wall and you won't see a different solution to a problem you're trying to solve."

That's from the nine-page color commentary on "Creative Thinker," one of the 10 talents of successful entrepreneurs according to the hot-off-the-press book/assessment from Gallup, the creators of the international bestseller, StrengthsFinder 2.0.

This new book and 25-minute online assessment, "Entrepreneurial StrengthsFinder," measures 10 talents, or drivers of entrepreneurial success. "The degree of your natural ability in each of the 10 talents will determine where you will be successful and where you will fall short in your entrepreneurial journey."

Co-authors Jim Clifton, chairman and CEO of Gallup, and Sangeeta Bharadwaj Badal, Ph.D., say their research reveals that "only about 5 in 1,000 people have the aptitude for starting and growing a business. In comparison, 20 in 1,000 have IQs high enough to be accepted into Mensa." (My assumption: if you're reading this review, you're a Mensa member, right?)

Over the years of guilting leaders and managers into reading books, I've probably gone overboard on entrepreneurship books, like Entrepreneurial Leadership: Finding Your Calling, Making a Difference.

So finally, I have a cogent reason for my gut instinct that entrepreneurs are needed more than ever. But is this new assessment just one more flash-in-the-pan, leadership fad-of-the-year?

To find out, I was the almost-silent observer last weekend when my entrepreneurial son, Jason Pearson, author of Unseen: Jason Pearson Paintings, completed the 25- minute online assessment. (Each book includes a unique access code that can only be used once.) My gut response while looking over Jason's laptop: fantastic questions!

Gallup wants to inspire Americans to wake up and start spotting young entrepreneurs. The message: the need is not more innovation; we need entrepreneurship which creates customers--and customers create jobs. Jim Clifton (the son of the late Donald Clifton, the father of the StrengthsFinder movement) sold me on this bedrock core belief in the first 35 pages.

Upon completing the assessment, Jason downloaded two helpful documents: a color-coded three-page report of his entrepreneurial strengths--strongest to weakest; and a 20-page practical guide on suggested next steps.

Jason was dominant in three talents: Creative Thinker, Relationship-Builder, and Risk-Taker. He had four more talents termed "contributing," and three at the bottom in "supporting." Nothing complicated--and all very practical and straightforward.

The customized color-coded report defines your entrepreneurial strengths:
* Dominant talents. "You consistently and naturally lead with your dominant talents."
* Contributing talents. "You show some evidence of your contributing talents, but you must deliberately apply them to achieve success."
* Supporting talents. "The talents that you don't naturally lead with are your supporting talents."

Jason, who has started four companies, has the entrepreneurial genes. The authors note research "that the tendency toward entrepreneurship is between 37% and 48% genetic."

I wasn't surprised that Creative Thinking was Jason's top entrepreneurial strength. Ask him for 10 ideas, and he'll deliver 20 by the time you've learned how to spell "entrepreneurial."

But I was pleasantly surprised by the book's practical definitions and color commentary on each of the 10 entrepreneurial strengths. That section highlights key traits of each strength "in action" (with PowerPoint-worthy quotes from well-known entrepreneurs like Warren Buffet and others); cautionary notes (be sure to read the warnings for Risk-Takers); and then a practical list of next steps for maximizing that talent. All in about eight or nine pages each--easy reading and immediate comprehension (for you Mensa types!).

For example, under Creative Thinker:
* "You have a mind that is typically firing with many different ideas."
* "Comfortable with the unknown and the unfamiliar, you always look for new ways to combine and recombine resources to create innovative solutions for your customers."
* "As a Creative Thinker, you are quick to act. You seize opportunities and are usually the first mover in the market."
* Other code words: "rule breakers," "refuse to be bogged down," "you like to work autonomously," "push the boundaries."
* Under cautions: "You may fall prey to `incumbent inertia' as you achieve success and growth. Maintain the organizational flexibility that allowed you to explore your creative imagination in the first place."

If you score high, as Jason did, as a Risk-Taker, share the color commentary with your spouse, family, and friends. "Contrary to popular belief, highly successful entrepreneurs are not risk seekers, they are risk mitigators par excellence. If you are a Risk-Taker, you instinctively know how to manage high-risk situations."

While Risk-Takers are "avid problem solvers," some (on the extreme side) hold themselves in high regard, a phenomenon known as "hyper-core self-evaluation" (hyper-CSE). This may lead to "shiny new object syndrome."

Andy Dunn, co-founder and CEO of Bonobos: "Prior to a lobotomy I just underwent which removed shiny new object syndrome (SNOS) from my brain, I was both an asset and a threat to my own company."

There are six ways for Risk-Takers to maximize their talent (plus color commentary on each):
1. Know what you do know and what you do not know.
2. Take risks incrementally.
3. Beware of confirmation bias. ("Ask people with opposing views to counter your initial idea or concept.")
4. Construct different scenarios to guide your decision-making process.
5. Don't gamble. (Institute a "cooling-off period" before you're swept away by the brilliance of your own ideas!)
6. Kill unimportant projects.

Bill Gates on Warren Buffet: "He doesn't invest--take a swing of the bat--unless the opportunity appears unbelievably good."

Who should read this book?
* CEOs and senior leaders (to spot and coach young entrepreneurs)
* Educators
* Parents and grandparents
* Spouses and family members (part encouragement, part therapy!)
* Mensa members!

Clifton suggests every city (his core belief: cities are the fulcrum for the future) install an early identification assessment system and offer the Entrepreneurial StrengthsFinder assessment to thousands of students (prime age: high school freshmen to sophomores in college).

Clifton begins this book with a sobering thought: "During my 40 years at Gallup, I've observed that when very talented leaders fail, it's often because their thinking failed them. Not their management or leadership skills, but their thinking about a core belief that they put at the center of all of their strategies. Because they are so wrong about that core belief, every subsequent decision actually makes things worse, because every decision is tied to that belief. The more they manage and lead, the worse things get."

"This is happening in Washington, D.C., but it is also happening in many cities throughout America." His core belief: "Entrepreneurs create customers. And customers, in turn, create jobs and economic growth. Almost no leader knows this."

"Virtually all U.S. and world leaders have misdiagnosed the core problem and put billions and billions of dollars into mistaken strategies that are not helping America's economy, much less the world's."

Ever have something mislabeled be so awesome and yet still so wrong

Ever have something mislabeled be so awesome and yet still so wrong?

It's not quite as bad with this book, but there is nothing really entrepreneurial about it. They give you a profile of your action abilities that might fit into a entrepreneur's mindset, but it isn't as though it will tell you what you'll excel in or be best at like the Strengthfinder 2.0 book.

I'd say get it to take the test, read what it says about you, and then think about what that means to you. It won't open the universe to you, but it can help you frame your universe a bit better.

THERESE JONES is an associate professor at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities and director of the Arts and Humanities in Healthcare Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She is the editor of the Journal of Medical Humanities, and her extensive publications include Sharing the Delirium: Second Generation AIDS Plays and Performances.

DELESE WEAR is a professor of behavioral and community health sciences at Northeast Ohio Medical University. She has written and edited numerous books, including Educating for Professionalism: Creating a Culture of Humanism in Medical Education.

LESTER D. FRIEDMAN is chair of media and society at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A leading scholar on media representations of medicine, he is the editor of Cultural Sutures: Medicine and Media and co-editor of Picture of Health: Medical Ethics and the Movies.

Insightful for people in the health field

Very well written and easy to follow. I bought this for my Medical Humanities class. It is actually very easy to follow along and I like how they author uses stories of their own or from other people. He explores many topics I did not think to consider until reading it. If you are curious about humanities in the health field and how to really understand people with different disabilities, this is really a good book to look into. I also like that he sections out the chapters so that maybe 3-5 chapters are in one section and they all have one idea in common.

The essays in this collection purport to set out a vision of the Health Humanities as an interdisciplinary field and also to provide an overview of key concepts, such as race, disability, death and dying, the body, and aging. I was disappointed that each section includes a set of articles on the key concept, but does not provide a general overview of that topic for newcomers to the field. I assigned this book in a graduate class hoping that students would gain a basic sense of key theorists, terms, and definitions for each topic. The book reads instead as more of a typical edited collection, so it was not useful for the purpose I imagined. I also hoped for more authors written by interdisciplinary teams of researchers, and more articles that explicitly described or modeled research methods and studies.
