This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human ...

This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human energy systems (aerobic, anaerobic lactic and anaerobic alactic). The essential agenda of the book is to counteract the pervasive HIIT/circuit driven training philosophy and attempt to answer the question of which energy system fighters should be training through objective means. It shines at explaining the differences between the energy systems and what sorts of activities each is associated with.

The book, while touting its own scientific backing constantly, does not contain any citations to back up claims from actual literature. This is very common in sports science books. In fact most coaches don't feel the need to justify their methods at all but rather just say that their athletes are good so clearly it works. However, the book is packed full of reminders every 5 pages that it's backed by the latest science and it falls just as flat in backing up those claims. For instance, the author claims that the anaerobic lactic system can be improved by about 15-30% through training. Where did he get that number? He gives 9 distinct protocols to train the aerobic system which supposedly each cause distinct adaptations. These are clearly mere anecdotes from his experience training athletes. Nothing wrong with anecdotes, but the book uses them in place of the science that was its entire selling point.

Now, there are places where the author has clearly looked at the research but omitted the details for the sake of his audience. For instance, he mentions a study done on the energy production done by each system at various running distances (the important detail was even at 400m the aerobic system dominates). This study was real, but the author didn't cite it. Thus, the book is not a treatise which defends the author's point of view on energy systems to coaches, scientists and skeptics.

You'll see in other reviews that the book also is not a template-driven prescription for athletes. You won't find a ready-made template that you can apply blindly, which is probably for the best. While the book is well written and gives good overviews of the energy systems, if it isn't for scientists, isn't for coaches, and isn't for athletes, then who is it for exactly?

BEST BOOK ON SPORTS CONDITIONING - EVER

I have been in the Strength&Conditioning and Military Physical Training arena for over 30 years and without doubt Ultimate MMA Conditioning is THE best book on developing all-round conditioning - for any sport.

High Intensity exercise remains the best 'tool' in the box for heart health and weight management; however without an underpinning aerobic foundation you will not get the most out of HI work, this book explains all the why's and how's, including a fool proof progressive programme.

I was so impressed that I recommended it to the Physical Training Specialist Advisor Royal Marines as a reference book for the Physical Training School.

Buy it regardless of your fitness goal - you will not buy another...

This book is absolutely fabulous. If you're looking to read more about grappling technique than metabolic pathways, this book is not for you. If you're looking to increase metabolic capacity and want to know not only how, but also why the how works, this is for you. It's a little expensive, but definitely worth it.

About the Author

Dr. Whitney H. Rapp is an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, where she teaches courses on inclusive education pedagogy, assessment, classroom management, and diversity issues. She is currently serving as Associate Dean of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., School of Education. Dr. Rapp holds a B.A. in elementary education and psychology from the State University of New York at Potsdam and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in special education from Michigan State University. Prior to her 14 years of experience in teacher education programs, Whitney taught many different grade levels in a variety of settings, from fully inclusive classrooms to residential special education schools. All of these experiences reinforced her belief that all children can learn and that all children should learn together in inclusive settings. Whitney's current research interests include universal design for learning—particularly strategies to support executive functioning abilities. She presents often at local, state, and national conferences on differentiation of instruction and teacher education. Whitney's spare time is spent with her husband and three children, riding bikes, hiking, gardening, reading, watching movies, and enjoying Owasco Lake.

Going back to the beginning

I am re-reading this series to remember what enthralled me about it now that the 25th book is coming out. I remember finding Jean Claude cold and ruthless. Most of the characters were not very likeable, but that is their appeal. They are all too human, and often the worst monsters of all.
The world created is fascinating and draws you in waiting for the next event.
So after at least two decades, I am still hooked.

Guilty pleasures is the beginning of an amazing journey, a journey I have taken more than once. Anita is someone we all need to find a little more of in ourselves. She keeps it real, she makes you think, she makes you want to face your fears and spit on them. She makes you want to go on her journey and hope it never ends. You want to be her friend you want to know the people she knows. And every day you wish that downtown St. Louis really was filled with vampires and shapeshifters. This is my third time starting this journey and as always I hope it never ends

I realise that this is a really popular series and I'll admit the second half of this book was better put together than the first, suggesting that the latter books might be better than this first one. But I spent that first half of this book completely lost and wondering what exactly was going on. I came back here to the internet three times to verify I was actually reading the first book in the series, because there were so many references to past events and people she knew kept popping up unexpectedly.

The book also kept leaping from place to place, activity to activity, etc. It was hard to keep up with. Further, it felt very much like Anita kept putting herself at pointless risks. Should I be surprised that she was attacked by vampires when she's hanging out at the vampire bar? I mean, she's not known to be on good terms with any of them.

Being as the book felt like it picked up in the middle of something it also felt like the Anita's character development must have been left somewhere in that missing first half. She felt incredibly flat to me. Yes, she was pleasantly sarcastic and I enjoyed that, but the book ended and I didn't feel like I had gotten to know her at all.

I'm also baffled by the fact that this is considered a PNR by many. It's certainly what I went in expecting. From reading reviews I see that quite a lot of sex must come in at some point in the very lengthy series, but this book is bone dry in the romance department. There is a person who, if the standard PNR trope holds true, will likely become a romantic interest at some future point, but there is no spark here. None. Nada. Nothing.

Needless to say I'm disappointed.
