About the Author
Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Four of his books are: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN INTERACTION; INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS; LYING AND DECEPTION IN HUMAN INTERACTION and THE HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.

Judith A. Hall is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University. She has published widely on topics in nonverbal communication, especially accuracy in perceiving nonverbal cues. She has been Editor of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior and is currently one of its Associate Editors. She is author of NONVERBAL SEX DIFFERENCES: COMMUNICATION ACCURACY AND EXPRESSIVE STYLE, co-editor of INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY: THEORY AND MANAGEMENT with Frank J. Bernieri, and co-editor of the HANDBOOK OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION with Mark L. Knapp.

Terrence G. Horgan is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Michigan-Flint.

About the Author
Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003) was a British explorer and travel writer. He was born at Addis Ababa, Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). Educated at Eton and Oxford, he worked in the Sudan Political Service and and later, for a year, as a Political Officer for the Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Selassie. He is best known for two travel books: Arabian Sands (1959) and The Marsh Arabs (1964).
 
Rory Stewart (introducer) has written for the New York Times Magazine, Granta, and the London Review of Books, and is the author of The Places In Between and The Prince of the Marshes. A former fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the British government for services in Iraq.

A key to understanding the Arab world

Besides being a wonderful book, as other reviewers have remarked, 'Arabian Sands' is important reading for anyone who wants to understand the culture and history of the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
The Bedu are, and always have been, a small fraction of the Arabs; historically, they have been disliked, mistrusted and often hated by the settled Arabs of the Middle East. In North Africa, the Berbers (a completely different people, with non-Arabic languages) have sometimes been confused with the Bedu. The Bedu way of life is now nearly extinct; Thesiger's book, which describes his travels with the Yamani Bedu of Southern Arabia, is the only careful account of Bedu culture and Bedu peoples I have ever come across. I know of no similarly illuminating study of the Qaysi Bedu of Northern Arabia, not even the works of T. E. Lawrence.
The historical importance of the Bedu in the Arab world is that on several occasions from the 8th century to the 20th century, Bedu tribesmen formed the core of armies that swept across the Middle East and/or North Africa. Invading Bedu armies overthrew decadent regimes in North Africa in the 13th century, and effectively destroyed Berber power on the North African coast. Bedu formed the core of the Arab armies that defeated the Turks in the First World War, and were the core of the army which Ibn Saud created that turned him from being a refugee into being the founder of Saudi Arabia as it is today. How did the small number of people who comprised the various Bedu tribes exercise such military power throughout the Arab World? Read "Arabian Sands" to understand this.

One of my idols

I read this book when I was much younger and no one knew about this man nor much about Arabia. I was invited to be part of a team that would start an airline for the United Arab Emirates, a rather new country (formally the Trucial Coast- tribes that warred against each other and were Bedu and pearl divers). The airline was called Hamarein Air in about 1976 and was started by one little Bedu named Saif Hamarein. He owned small mini marts all over the Emirates, but especially in Ras al Khaima and Sharjah. he raised money from those to buy a 747!
I read this book as I started departing from LAX and since the flight was over 27 hours with a stop in Paris and an over night, I finished it.
This man, Sir Wilfred Thesiger was remarkable and although only 29 years old, struck off into uncharted lands even the Bedu did not dare cross. He traveled and lived among the tribes of all the areas he charted and learned amazing things from the nations. Because of him today, we learned much about a peoples unknown to the western world. I often wondered what happened to him and since we did not have computers, there was little way to actually look for him. He seemed to have vanished. But on my second time living among the Emirates in the 1990's, they found him in a mud hut in Africa being cared for by an Ethiopian woman and he had satchels of film never processed from his trips in the 1940's! I own 2 of these unpublished photos of his journeys and had the amazing pleasure of meeting my idol at 90+ years old! I cherish my photo with him. He was a remarkable man who did much to bring us the very news about corners of the earth he was later to regret as it brought westernization to the quiet countries and people he adored.

"Lawrence of Arabia" just scratched the surface

We know from LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and other sources that the "Empty Quarter" desert of Saudi Arabia can kill the unprepared or unwary. But there was much more to negotiating this vast and varied tract of sand and other obstacles than the movie would have had us believe. The product of a British colonial upbringing and a relentless explorer, Sir Wilfrid Thesiger tracked these sands, many of them heretofore untracked, with the help of a handful of scouts and some survival skills. His prose, while deliberately plain, is unmatched in its common sense, narrative drive, and sense of the relentlessness of a desert transit. This is probably Sir Wilfred's best-known book, but I'd also like to recommend The Marsh Arabs (Penguin Classics), a journal he published some years later about negotiating the Iraqi swamps and wetlands, and interacting with the unusual Arabs who depended on boats, fishing and reeding for sustenance, before Sadam Hussein drained most of the waterways in the 1980s.

The Brothers is a extraordinary look at how music and culture nurture us and redeem us. The power of this book lies in the unashamed honesty of the Neville Brothers and the wisdom and confidence of the author to allow the brothers to tell their own story. Unencumbered by analysis or author's comments, the brothers simply present their stories while the author ties the threads together to show how the Neville brothers as individuals worked through their personal problems and came together as a family and a musical group. There is no other book that means more to me than The Brothers. Their story has helped me to make sense of my own journey as an American journalist and music critic living and working on the island of Trinidad in the West Indies.

This is a great Autobiography. David Ritz's format is really good. Each brother told their own stories and the were all connected. I feel I know the Neville Brothers personally. The transparancy of each brother and their life stories are moving. Thanks for sharing so much of yourselves.

This is one of my all time FAVORITE books

I first found this book in a book sale bin and boy am I glad I brought it home. I couldnt put it down. Im not that into the Neville Bros music, but I love to sink my teeth into music history and culture and this book is FULL of it. Ive since order multiple copies to give to my friends. These stories are full of passion, adventure and courage. I wish I could better explain, just read it!!

About the Author

Jerrold H. Zar received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Northern Illinois University in 1962. He later earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology and zoology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Zar then returned to Northern Illinois University for 34 years to serve in a variety of capacities. He joined the faculty at NIU as an Assistant Professor in 1968 and quickly rose through the ranks of associate and full professor to become Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in 1978. He served two terms as Chair of the Department and then, became the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research and Dean of the Graduate School.  He was a founder of the Illinois Minority Graduate Incentive Program and the Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunities Program, where he helped create and protect fellowship opportunities for minority graduate students at universities across the state. Zar is a member of 17 professional scientific societies, including being an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His many research publications cover a range of topics, from statistical analysis to physiological adaptations of animals to their environment.

Zar's Biostatistical Analysis remains one of the best

I have used Biostatistical analysis (2nd ed., 1984) as a constant reference in reports for clients in my consulting work. Not only for biostatistical applications but from everything from basic statistics to data mining apps. Since private consultants have to pay from their own pockets for books, I used it for 18 years until I recently thought 1984 sounds a bit ancient! I then invested in the new, 2010, 5th edition. I am not disappointed. It is a beautiful book with dependable methods, great explanations of some difficult topics. The footnotes are delightful as they contain wonderful historical information about the history of the subject, the people who were (and are) responsible for its development and much more. One of the main features is two chapters on circular statistics. This is where the data deal, for example, with wind directions. As is so well explained by Zar, this deals with data that do not have a true zero value. Who is to say that North should be taken as 0°? And 220° is not necessarily "larger" than 20°. So, if the USUAL average (or confidence interv als, etc.) is computed, the analyst may end with egg on his/her face (e.g. the average of 1° and 359° is 0° and NOT 180°!). I am not aware of any book at this level that covers this topic. The author deliberately chose to avoid recommending specific software but I am disappointed that it is not mentioned, for example where the chi-square test is discussed, that there is specific software that can compute the exact p-values for the chi-square test when the asymptotic conditions are not met. I also think that the author must think of removing most of the almost 200 pages of tables and replace that with some basics of data mining. Data are now so prolific, also in biosciences, that I think such an addition would be very useful. Biostatistical Analysis (5th Edition)

Excellent Book

Supplier: Prompt and received well ahead of schedule!

Book: This is a classic. Some stated that it was high level, but I didn't see it that way. He provides great examples with good details on the exact calculations. One should be able to perform all calculations with any usual calculator or spreadsheet. He does not delve into any derivations or higher level math such as derivatives and integrals. In fact, the entire book is very practical.

This book covers from Biostatistics approach which means that there is more dealing with the nonparametric side and more dealing with metrics for species, diseases, etc. not usually found in statistical texts. He covers that same areas as the usual texts, but adds better examples, detail calculations and includes good interpretations. The emphasis was more on "use" rather than subtle statistical basics for the methods.

One of the great features was inclusion of Circular Statistics, which to date his is the only one I've come across that actually provides great coverage of this area. This is not covered in any texts that I've owned, except the original works by Mardia. And the examples are very good in how to use and applications. This area is surprisingly encountered more often than not and is always overlooked. I would buy this book just for that section alone. In fact this approach solves a lot of those periodic, seasonal variation problems I ran across in industry.

Overall, he covers the usual stats, adds a lot of features (similarity, diversity, various indices, etc.), covers "random", added chapters on circular, added "intraclass correlation" which is also overlooked, and still covers the basic stats that all need to know. It's more like a "handbook" with great examples, and does not approach from a Math-Stat-Must Derive Foundation from Theorems. Sometimes all we want to do is solve the problem, understand the assumptions included in the method, and not dwell on deriving and interpreting or deriving from some high level, fundamental theorem. I've always hated "theorem-speak" where they provide 2 theorems, 5 corollaries, and then hand you a practical problem to solve (where the derivation of the connection between theory and application was "left to the student!" -- my major was not math; but in sciences sometimes you just need to use the methods correctly and do not need to carry all the deriviations. I think that when I see the methods in a rep. text, I found that I can usually trust the integrity of the authors. Past that point, I just need to apply the methods and not make mistakes.)

I started with 2nd ed, bought the 3rd and 4th. I don't see that the 5th offered much more than the 4th. And the price of the 4th (because the 5th is out there) is reasonable. This is one of the standard texts I keep in my library; I will be getting rid of some of those standard texts.

Excellent high-school level statistics text requiring only a basic background in Algebra-2/pre-Calculus

The text is a bit dry, formulaic and encyclopedic - but thorough in what it covers with good examples and tables. It also requires minimal background in science and mathematics. I have used it as a reference to bone up on statistical inference and some of the basic methodology used in clinical trials, medicine and genetics.

Like: The price was just a couple of bucks - well worth it for a reference and much cheaper than the ink and paper used in an ink jet. Good for us old-timers who prefer written texts over ebooks.
Dislike: I personally prefer more sophisticated treatments that are more suitable for physics, physical sciences and engineering. I would not recommend purchasing the newest edition for which the cost increases by 100x.
It is well-suited for all levels of education and fields requiring only high-school algebra II/pre-calculus, and non-mathematically intensive areas, specifically in biology, health-science, nursing and/or medicine. It is also of value for business, economics, and as an aid for data analysis in general. It may be of some value as background material for information/communication theory, statistical mechanics/optics,etc.
