Wonderful art collection from Pixiv

[[VIDEOID:moE74FSHXF1CCG]]Pixiv is one of Japan's largest art community. It's somewhat like deviantART but their website looks totally different.

Pixiv have their own quarterly magazines and occasionally also publish art book collections.

Pixiv Almanac Volume 1 is the English edition of the original Japanese edition Pixiv nenkan 2010 Official Book. There is actually a 2009 edition but for some reason, the 2010 edition was chosen to be the volume 1 in English.

This paperback is 258 pages as compared to the 272 pages for the Japanese edition. I'm not sure if anything significant is missing.

There are almost close to 200 artists featured in the book. It's mainly character art in different anime, manga and CG style. The variety is great except that most are female characters. Hatsune Miku seems like the most popular character and there are many pieces with her. There's only a handful of background art. Most illustrations are quite elaborate and detailed, the simplified anime style is actually rare.

Each artist has only 1 to 2 pages of work featured. Some of them are printed smaller than quarter page size which makes it difficult to look at the details. The good thing is the artists' websites are provided so you can check out more of their art online.

I'm impressed by the quality of submissions. This book really makes me wonder why deviantART don't have anything similar.

It's a great book for those who like Japanese character art.

Would have been better with half the artists / larger art

As with any collection of artwork (or art books in general) the main draw is and always will be the art; But what happens when the art is so small that you have to squint in order to make out any discernible details? Granted, I have better than average near-sightedness, and even I had trouble appreciating the work that was put into many of the pieces collected in this book. They were just too small, which admittedly, has now become a pet peeve of mine; why include an artist's work if it is too miniscule to view properly? The book gets a higher rating based on the sheer number of artist's featured, but really, it could have done with limiting the number of them to half of what was ultimately used and give the "best-of-the-best" full page spreads. Some of the work is so amazing, that they are severely gimped by taking up less than 10% of the page.
Also, I understand that Japan has a fascination with Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid, but there were so many images of Miku throughout the book, you have to wonder whose idea it was to showcase that much fanart based on one character. It is the equivalent of having a calendar of the same model in different poses; some people will be into it, but as for me, I like variety. I have nothing against Vocaloid, but so many images of the same design is overkill and should have been saved for a book devoted to said character. What's wrong with releasing a collection devoted to Kinu/Vocaloid? That being said, if you don't mind that at times up to 8 images are crammed onto a page not much larger than standard paper size (8.5"X 11"), you will be treated to some awesome work by some truly talented individuals. I just feel as if their work deserves much better treatment.

Not My Favorite Pixiv Book, But You Can't Always Please Everyone

Personally, I found the selections in here to be on the disappointing side compared to the other Pixiv books released in Japan, but that's just my personal tase. I do, however, think that it is a good start for Pixiv art books in English. I was a bit surprised to find that it does not have a dust jacket like the books from Japan, but it does use high-quality, glossy paper (which does a very good job of reflecting light). Honestly, it's hard to review an art book without factoring in personal taste. The selections in here will appeal to some people, but for others, they will not. The construction of the book itself is very well done.

Another great Putnam history

If you're a serious fan of Aviation history you're probably familiar with the Putnam aeronautical series of monographs of major US and UK aircraft makers.
Miles was a smaller UK firm that produced a series of outstanding light aircraft before WWII and naturally switched to trainers during the war before failing in the overcrowded postwar UK market.

Written by a firm insider, this book gives you the complete history of all Miles types and each type is illustrated with plenty of photos and three-view illustrations. Many un-built projects are also detailed and shown and illustrated. Brown also discusses why each type was successful..or failed to be built, usually leveling the blame at the UK Ministry of Aircraft Production (who if you believe the author, got it wrong as often as they got it right). All too often a promising design is detailed only to end with a statement that it wasn't ordered by the bureaucrats and the UK industry or war effort was the poorer for it. Among those not built were a series of blended wing transports and forward wing aircraft that would look modern today. After the original firm financially failed in the late 40s, Miles tried to get back into the business in the mid-50s with a jet trainer, the M100 Student. Despite great looks (stretched with a back seat, it would make a fine private jet today) it failed to secure an order from the RAF.

I have most of the Putnam books, and this is one of the most interesting. Not only did the firm produce great aircraft, it had a sense of innovation that allowed it think far beyond its humble roots. Some of the un-built projects included advanced long range airliners and supersonic research aircraft. It's well written in a conversational style, almost as if you're sitting in a pub with the author or the Miles brothers.
Long out of print, this is an expensive book on the secondary market, but if you're a fan of UK aviation, well worth the price.

William Roche is Professor of Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the School of Business, University College Dublin and Honorary Professor at the School of Management, Queen's University Belfast. He is the author and editor of numerous books, including Recession at Work (with Paul Teague, Anne Coughlan and Majella Fahy, Routledge, 2013); Managing Workplace Conflict in Ireland (with Deborah Hahn and Paul Teague, Government Publications, 2009), and Partnership at Work, (with John Geary, Routledge, 2006). He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of the British Journal of Industrial Relations, Industrial Relations Journal, Human Resource Management Journal, and Labour and Industry. He has led or contributed to strategic reviews undertaken by such bodies as the Labour Relations Commission, The National Economic and Social Council, the National Centre for Partnership and Performance and IBEC.

Paul Teague is Professor of Management at the Management School, Queen's University Belfast and Visiting Professor at the School of Business, University College Dublin. Previously, he has held positions at the London School of Economics and Cranfield School of Management. He has also been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Massachusetts. He is author of Employment Standard-Setting and Dispute resolution in the Republic of Ireland (with Damian Thomas, Oaktree Press, 2008) and Managing Workplace Conflict in Ireland (with Deborah Hahn and Bill Roche, Government Publications 2009). His other research publications on conflict resolution include Towards Flexible Workplace Governance (Studies in Public Policy, Institute of Policy Studies, Trinity College Dublin) and articles in leading journals such the British Journal of Industrial relations, Work, Employment and Society and Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal.

Alexander Colvin is Professor of Labor Relations and Conflict Resolution at the ILR School, Cornell University and member of the Advisory Board of the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution at Cornell. He has published articles in journals such as Industrial & Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Relations Industrielles, the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution, and the Cornell Journal of Law & Public Policy. He is also co-author (with Harry C. Katz and Thomas A. Kochan) of the textbook An Introduction to Collective Bargaining and Industrial Relations, 4th edition (Irwin-McGraw-Hill).

Detailed Look at the Bible During the Middle Ages

Good reference books can be hard to find. I did not say that they are impossible to find. There are many out there. It is the good ones that are hard to find. This is especially true when you are talking about subjects that few are researching. The Bible in the Middles Ages is not one that is a common topic, but it is an important one nonetheless. The Practice of the Bible in the Middle Ages is one of those reference books that you must have in your Medieval library.

First off, this is not an easy read by the fireside book. This is an academic book. It is deep and rich with information that might not be easily absorbed by a casual reader. You must want to know what is said between the pages and you must be willing to absorb it all.

The Practice of the Bible in the Middles Agesis not a book written by one author. It is a collection of essays/works that cover the topic thoroughly. The chapters include "The Bible and Liturgy", "The Bible and Monasticism", "Biblical Exegesis Through the Twelfth Century", and "The Old French Bible". As you can see from these few chapter titles, this book is meant for the serious student of biblical history and history of the Middle Ages.

I found that I learned quite a bit in what I read. In all honesty, there were some things above my head but the context surrounding the sections helped me comprehend the piece. I discovered a better understanding of Catholic liturgy as well as how the Bible was maintained throughout the centuries. I have read many books that refer to the various liturgical times of the day but never fully understood them. This book gave me the education I needed for just that.

I. Bernard Cohen (1 March 1914 - 20 June 2003) was the first American to receive a Ph.D. in history of science, was a Harvard undergraduate ('37) and then a Ph.D. student and protégé of George Sarton who was the founder of Isis and the History of Science Society. Cohen taught at Harvard from 1942 until his death, and his tenure was marked by the development of Harvard's program in the history of science. He went on to succeed Sarton as editor of Isis (1952-1958) and, later, president of the Society (1961-1962); he was also a president of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science. Cohen was an internationally recognized Newton scholar; his interests were encyclopedic, ranging from science and public policy to the history of computers, with several decades as a special consultant for history of computing with IBM. Among his hundreds of publications were such major books as Franklin and Newton (1956), The Birth of a New Physics (1959), The Newtonian Revolution (1980), Revolution in Science (1985), Science and the Founding Fathers (1995), Howard Aiken: Portrait of a Computer Pioneer (1999), and his last book, The Triumph of Numbers (2005), not to mention two jointly authored contributions, the variorum edition and new English translation of Newton's Principia. Cohen's April 1955 interview with Albert Einstein was the last Einstein gave before his death, in that same month. It was published that July in Scientific American, which also published Cohen's 1984 essay on Florence Nightingale.
