A new view of the Napoleonic wars at sea

This is not a halting imitation of Hornblower or Patrick O'Brian. Far from it. Just as rousing in action and accurate in maritime detail, Bond's latest tells a story of those desperate times from a totally new angle, that of the new young captain of a revenue cutter in a south England town that is a rats' nest of smugglers. Not only does the attractive young Captain Griffin have to hunt down and apprehend smugglers who will stop at nothing to foil him, but he has to battle intimidated villagers, as well. A page-turner, highly recommended.

Action and intrigue in the Napoleonic age

Alaric Bond's story of the maritime revenue service has as much action and more intrigue than most novels set in the more familiar atmosphere of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic age. In 1801 Commander Griffin leaves the Honorable East India Company officer corp for command of a beautiful, swift sailing revenue cutter, the Bee. Any joy in his new command is quashed when Griffin finds a highly organized crime and smuggling syndicate operating in his new home port of Newhaven. The Horsebridge gang is dominating the port town, which may include Customs House officials and local justices, through a combination of intimidation and reward. Will the town of Newhaven, and more particularly an attractive and capable young woman, rally in support of Commander Griffin, or be as complicit in his destruction as they were his predecessor?

Turn a Blind Eye is a thrilling adventure the equal of any by Steve Berry or William Dietrich, with battles by land and sea that are not to be missed. A highly enjoyable and satisfying read.

The original edition of this text was warmly received in the market based on a high level of scholarship, comprehensive contents, and superb visuals.

Splendid Textbook

This may be the best textbook I've ever read. Kleiner has written lots of textbooks--but this is his field of study, so he here combines all he's learned from revising Gardiner's History of Art with real expertise in the particular subject. This is indeed a textbook, written for art history classes, but it avoids the one damn fact after another mode of the vast majority of textbooks, and instead rather brilliantly synthesizes the major trends and developments over the centuries of Roman art. It must of course simplify to do so, but the author is evidently senior enough to have the confidence to simplify (unlike too many of his rivals, who are either constitutionally unable to simplify, or too afraid of what scholarly peers may say in reviews to write in a way that will be intelligible to undergraduates or others new to this area). It's very well produced (though hardly cheap). If you are interested in Roman art, and indeed want something like a series of lectures delivered by very fine teacher, you won't go wrong here. This book will provide you with the grounding to go on to try more specialized books, or with enough background on Roman Art to help inform your study of later periods influenced by the Romans.

An excellent introductory resource

I use this book as the primary text in my class on Roman Art and Archaeology. While it has largely an Art Historical bent, it is still the best, most comprehensive book that is currently available (I switch from Strong's Roman Art that pre-dates this text by a few decades).

The illustrations and images are beautiful, it has snippets of history and text to provide good context, and is organized in a nice, chronological fashion. I would highly recommend it to educators and beginner students who are studying Classical Art History.

Good overview

Fred Kleiner's book was for me a great introduction to Roman art. In general he traces its development from the introduction of Greek statuary as Marcellus' spoils of war up until the Imperial adoption of Christianity under Constantine. Kleiner primarily uses Roman history as the route for his survey, but he makes a couple of side trips to Pompeii and Ostia along the way. He presents the major trends in artistic styles over the centuries and highlights the influence of technological innovations. He gives an overview of the evolution of Roman architecture from the thatched huts to the elegant temples and public buildings of the high empire, as well as Roman sculpture, painting, mosaics, and gem carving. He presents examples of works that illustrate the basic characteristics that distinguished one era from another. The only area where I felt that the information was deficient was Roman glass. But in general, I think it's an excellent introduction to the subject. The book is rife with high quality color photographs, as well as maps, diagrams, and computer-generated reconstructions of sites that are now only piles of rubble, and a useful glossary at the back. There are sidebars on "Art and Society" (which describe such things as the Roman house, an afternoon at the baths, spectacles in the Colosseum, etc.), "Architectural Basics" (columns, vaults, arches, etc.), "Written Sources," and others that give additional background information on the works studied. Four stars.

About the Author
An attorney in private practice, Heather Meeker is a 20-year veteran of Silicon Valley who specializes in intellectual property transactions for technology clients in a range of industries including software, communications, educational testing, computer equipment, and medical devices. She has extensive experience in open source licensing strategies and in intellectual property and technology matters related to mergers and acquisitions. Ms. Meeker served as an adjunct professor of law at Hastings College of the Law and University of California Berkeley School of Law, teaching seminars on technology licensing. A member of the American Law Institute (ALI), she has served as an adviser to ALI projects, Principles of the Law of Software Contracts (2010) and Restatement of the Law, Copyright (ongoing). She has also served as counsel for the Mozilla Foundation and other open source organizations. Ms. Meeker graduated from Yale with a BA in economics and earned her JD from Boalt Hall School of Law, where she served as editor in chief of the Berkeley Technology Law Review. Prior to law school, she worked as a software engineer.

If you want to understand and speak the open source lingo fluently, then Meeker’s latest The Open (Source) for Business is your resource. It unassumingly starts by explaining the basics of software. Then, helpfully dives into open source basics and related intellectual property issues. And, before you know it, you will find yourself enjoying what Meeker does best: skillfully dissecting and organizing much more advanced open sources concepts and problems in the context of corporate merger and acquisitions, litigation, and government regulations. Don’t be surprised if you end up loving the book just a little too much (despite the notoriously unsexy subject matter)! Meeker’s well-written, practical, and approachable book is an opportunity to re-discover your nerdy virtues as you become proficient in open source concepts. Clarity and Concision - Read this book!

This book's tagline is "A Practical Guide to Open Source Software Licensing" and it lives up to that billing. First off, the writing style is very easy to read and leads the reader through the software licensing labyrinth with clarity and concision.

The author quickly establishes that she has first hand knowledge of software development and was a software developer prior to going into law. This experience informs every chapter and helps bring the subject matter to life with concrete examples and anecdotes that only a programmer would know.

Co-op Source has been an interest of mine for decades and I have read and re-read all of the major Open Source and Free Software licenses, read books about them and followed most of the major legal decisions on this subject. Having this background I expected most of the material to be review for me but was very pleasantly surprised. Not only did I learn new things but reading this book clarified some of my incorrect understanding of the legal issues involved.

If you use or otherwise participate in Open/Free software you should read this book.

About the Author
Donna M. Mertens is Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Research at Gallaudet University, where she teaches advanced research methods and program evaluation to deaf and hearing students. She received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Gallaudet. The primary focus of her work is transformative mixed methods inquiry in diverse communities, with priority given to the ethical implications of research in pursuit of social justice. A past president of the American Evaluation Association (AEA), Dr. Mertens provided leadership in the development of the International Organization for Cooperation in Evaluation and the establishment of the AEA Diversity Internship Program with Duquesne University. She has received AEA’s highest honors for service to the organization and the field, as well as for her contributions to evaluation theory. She is the author of several books and is widely published in major professional journals. Dr. Mertens conducts and consults on evaluations in many countries, including Egypt, India, South Africa, Botswana, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. Amy T. Wilson is Director of International Programs at the Mill Neck Family of Organizations, where she leads a team of deaf educational specialists who share their expertise, knowledge, and technical skills with parents, educators, and professionals in economically poor countries. Dr. Wilson was a professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Research at Gallaudet University for 14 years. After living in developing countries and noting the poor assistance people with disabilities were receiving from U.S. development organizations, she developed Gallaudet’s MA degree in International Development. The degree, which is the only one of its kind in the United States, focuses on the inclusion of people with disabilities in development assistance programs and in nongovernmental, federal, and faith-based development organizations both in the United States and overseas. Dr. Wilson was Program Director of the International Development Program; she also taught deaf and hearing students research and evaluation, theory and practice of international development, micropolitics, community development with people with disabilities, multicultural education, and gender, disability, and development. Dr. Wilson evaluates and advises development organizations and agencies (e.g., U.S. Agency for International Development, the InterAmerican Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Peace Corps) about the inclusiveness of their programs, as well as their effectiveness with various disability communities.

Messages from Archangel Michael

I have visited Ron Head's blog for few years now. His messages from Michael are the ones I love the most - they are always very uplifting and I feel embraced when I read them. I have also used his services as a channel to get some clarity or often just seeking support which he always gives me. I'm sure Ron is on first name basis if you will with my own guide. When I read that he published a book with messages from Michael I knew I had to buy it.
Many messages were from before I started reading his blog so they were very new to me. Others I recognized.
Topics include but are not limited to Channeling, Ascenion, Change, Imagination, Light and Energy, Meditation and Worthiness.
Some of my very favorite quotes from Michael are "We would tell you that our love for you has increased, but that, loving you more, is something that may be impossible".
"Present your I-am-a-child-of-Creator ticket and climb on board. In that moment the answer to your question "are we there yet" will change from No to Yes".
"If the only prayer you ever uttered were "thank you" it would be enough"

This book also included a beautiful mediation that I hadn't read before. It's about creating your heart's desire in your heart space. Placing your workbench there, with the tools and supplies. Use plenty of love from the biggest chest on the corner next to smaller box of Intentions. That mediation was so adorably written I will make it my daily practice. There are different meditations and intentions we can use to achieve what we want to achieve but this one seems to chime with my heart strings.

I understand not all messages are meant for us and what may fit me may not be right for you. But I do encourage you do give this book a try. See what you like, take that with you and leave the rest behind. I hope these messages wrap around your heart like they wrapped around mine.

Astrology of the Seers is an excellent introduction to Jyotish, as it is very clearly written, with elegance, and a poetic touch. As usual Vamadeva Sastri lives up to his name, and his book shows it. this is a very "spiritualised" approach to Jyotish, and was very helpful for me to get a foundation in seeing the Grahas as "spiritual beings" or Devas...Vamadeva's scholarship and grasp of the subtle is simply amazing, the mind is illumined by his fine writing, and the heart is melted in Divine Love. all i can say is thank you, thank you, thank you!! A lot of information

I am new to Vedic astrology, but this book has really captured it's essence and given me a good perspective into it. It is so cluttered with the amount of important issues that need to be covered it kind of leaves me in the dust, wondering if I missed the green light telling me when to go. Not only that I am to understand this only covers so much and that there is even more to learn, i.e. Nakshatras, ect. Apart from the devastating amount of inspiration I get from just reading this book, I feel I will read it again to fully understand what this book offers on this subject, before reading other books on this topic.

This book does a nice job reminding us of the big picture of human energy systems (aerobic, anaerobic lactic and anaerobic alactic). The essential agenda of the book is to counteract the pervasive HIIT/circuit driven training philosophy and attempt to answer the question of which energy system fighters should be training through objective means. It shines at explaining the differences between the energy systems and what sorts of activities each is associated with.

The book, while touting its own scientific backing constantly, does not contain any citations to back up claims from actual literature. This is very common in sports science books. In fact most coaches don't feel the need to justify their methods at all but rather just say that their athletes are good so clearly it works. However, the book is packed full of reminders every 5 pages that it's backed by the latest science and it falls just as flat in backing up those claims. For instance, the author claims that the anaerobic lactic system can be improved by about 15-30% through training. Where did he get that number? He gives 9 distinct protocols to train the aerobic system which supposedly each cause distinct adaptations. These are clearly mere anecdotes from his experience training athletes. Nothing wrong with anecdotes, but the book uses them in place of the science that was its entire selling point.

Now, there are places where the author has clearly looked at the research but omitted the details for the sake of his audience. For instance, he mentions a study done on the energy production done by each system at various running distances (the important detail was even at 400m the aerobic system dominates). This study was real, but the author didn't cite it. Thus, the book is not a treatise which defends the author's point of view on energy systems to coaches, scientists and skeptics.

You'll see in other reviews that the book also is not a template-driven prescription for athletes. You won't find a ready-made template that you can apply blindly, which is probably for the best. While the book is well written and gives good overviews of the energy systems, if it isn't for scientists, isn't for coaches, and isn't for athletes, then who is it for exactly?

I have been in the Strength&Conditioning and Military Physical Training arena for over 30 years and without doubt Ultimate MMA Conditioning is THE best book on developing all-round conditioning - for any sport.

High Intensity exercise remains the best 'tool' in the box for heart health and weight management; however without an underpinning aerobic foundation you will not get the most out of HI work, this book explains all the why's and how's, including a fool proof progressive programme.

I was so impressed that I recommended it to the Physical Training Specialist Advisor Royal Marines as a reference book for the Physical Training School.

Buy it regardless of your fitness goal - you will not buy another...

This book is absolutely fabulous. If you're looking to read more about grappling technique than metabolic pathways, this book is not for you. If you're looking to increase metabolic capacity and want to know not only how, but also why the how works, this is for you. It's a little expensive, but definitely worth it.

About the Author

Dr. Whitney H. Rapp is an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, where she teaches courses on inclusive education pedagogy, assessment, classroom management, and diversity issues. She is currently serving as Associate Dean of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., School of Education. Dr. Rapp holds a B.A. in elementary education and psychology from the State University of New York at Potsdam and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in special education from Michigan State University. Prior to her 14 years of experience in teacher education programs, Whitney taught many different grade levels in a variety of settings, from fully inclusive classrooms to residential special education schools. All of these experiences reinforced her belief that all children can learn and that all children should learn together in inclusive settings. Whitney's current research interests include universal design for learning—particularly strategies to support executive functioning abilities. She presents often at local, state, and national conferences on differentiation of instruction and teacher education. Whitney's spare time is spent with her husband and three children, riding bikes, hiking, gardening, reading, watching movies, and enjoying Owasco Lake.
