The Inquisitor's Mark (Eighth Day), by Dianne K. Salerni

The sequel to The Eighth Day, a fantasy adventure that VOYA called "unparalleled" and "absolutely necessary for middle grades," continues with higher stakes, greater world building, and more pulse-pounding action. With suspense, danger, and new discoveries around every corner, this fast-paced fantasy series that Kirkus Reviews raved was an exciting blend of "modern intrigue and ancient magic" will be a welcome addition for fans of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter.

After an all-out battle in Mexico, Jax, Riley, and Evangeline have gone into hiding. There are still rogue Transitioners and evil Kin lords on the hunt for Riley, a descendant of King Arthur, and Evangeline, a powerful wizard with bloodlines to Merlin, in order to gain control over the Eighth Day.

So when Finn Ambrose, a mysterious stranger, contacts Jax claiming to be his uncle, Jax's defenses go up—especially after Jax learns that he's holding Jax's best friend, Billy, hostage. To rescue Billy and keep Riley and Evangeline out of the fray, Jax sneaks off to New York City on his own. But once there, he discovers a surprising truth: Finn is his uncle, and Jax comes from a long line of Dulacs—a notoriously corrupt and dangerous Transitioner clan who want Riley dead and Evangeline as their prisoner. And family or not, the Dulacs will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Gr 4–7—This volume picks up right after the events of book one. Just weeks after saving the seven-day world from destruction at the hands of the evil King Wylit, Jax Aubrey discovers he might not be the orphan he thinks he is. When his best friend is kidnapped, Jax learns that he may have a mysterious long-lost Uncle and possibly the family he craves. Unfortunately, Uncle Finn happens to be the Inquisitor for the ruthless, criminally minded Dulacs, the family that had Jax's guardian Riley's entire family assassinated. During a search for Jax's liege-lady, Evangeline's sister Riley is trapped in the eighth day and Jax uses the time to rush to New York to save his friend and find out more about his family. Sure enough, Jax is related-his Uncle and Jax's deceased father look eerily alike, and Jax even has a near-identical cousin, Dorian. But is Dorian a friend or just another pawn in the seeming endless political intrigue of the Dulacs? Jax will need to find out soon or he could lose Riley, Evangeline, and much more. Salerni does a good job of portraying Jax's desperate need to fit in and find a family. Readers learn more about the Eighth Day, the Transitioners, the magical Kin, and their connection to Arthurian legend. The narrative is split between Jax and Dorian and there could have been a little more distinction between the two voices at times. The concept and the characters, however, are strong enough to carry the weight of a few minor flaws and The Inquisitor's Mark should continue to entertain its audience who will now eagerly await book three.—Erik Knapp, Davis Library, Plano, TX

Review
“Combining modern intrigue and ancient magic, this second volume in what continues to be an inspired series does not disappoint. Jax is an endearing mix of heroic and awkward as he struggles with his new identity. An exciting blend of Arthurian legend and organized crime.” (Kirkus)

“Blending Arthurian legend with action-packed adventure, the second in the Eighth Day series answers some questions but leaves plenty dangling for the next book.” (ALA Booklist)

“The concept and the characters are strong, and should continue to entertain its audience who will now eagerly await book three.” (School Library Journal)

“Ancient magic pairs nicely with modern intrigue. Complicated alliances and ruthless villains keep the pages turning. A promising start to a new trilogy.” (Kirkus Reviews (on The Eighth Day))

“[A] fast-paced, magical adventure. An unparalleled mix of evil villains, humor, and background that set this up for a likeable trilogy to be recommended for fans of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. Absolutely necessary for middle grades.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (on The Eighth Day))

“Fascinating…Melds Arthurian legend into present day. Fast paced and exciting.” (School Library Journal (on The Eighth Day))

Loved this!
By Natalie @ BookLoversLife
I loved Book 1 of this and couldn't wait to read more about Jax and the gang. After the ending of book 1 Jax and Evangeline are gone into hiding but they know they can't stay hiding because they have to try to find Evangelines sister. Riley decides to try and handcuff himself to Evangeline and see will she stay in the normal week, but it doesn't happen and Riley ends up stuck in the Eight day with Evangeline.

During that time Jax gets a call from his friend Billy to say that he was kidnapped by Jaxs Uncle. Jax doesn't know anything about an Uncle so is suitably nervous. Jax knows that he can't wait for Riley to come back, so he sets off to rescue his best friend! Once there he finds out some secrets and surprising truths. Can he rescue Billy and find out where Evangelines sister is before it's too late?

This was just as good, if not better, than book 1. There was so much more action, adventure and intrigue that it was such a rollercoaster.

Character wise, Jax was just as awesome as he was in book 1. He is so brave and true and it really comes across in The Inquisitors Mark. I felt for him when he learned about his father. No matter what was happening to him though, he always thought of his friends first. Riley isn't as prominent in this edition but he is as cool as ever. Billy was such a breath of fresh air! He is such a lovable character and I hope we see more of him in the next one. There is also a host of new characters introduced, with Dorian being my favourite. Despite being a Dulac, he was so nice and kind. I hope we see more of him too.

Plot wise, it was really fast paced and engaging. There are some secrets revealed. Jax finds out some things about his dad and Evangeline finds out things about her sister. While this answers some questions from book 1 we are left with even more after the ending of this!!

Overall, The Inquisitors Mark was an action packed and intense ride. The action and adventure start pretty much straight away and then we are whisked away on quite an intriguing and suspenseful read. Billy adds a welcome comic relief and is sure to be a favourite for everyone. There are magical creatures thrown into the mix this time and a lot more villains. With the ending we are left hanging but it just makes me extra eager to read book 3. Dianne K Salerni has created a fantastical realm and one I love diving into. Her writing brings the story to life and makes the reader eager to read more. I'd highly recommend this series to everyone.

Intense, intriguing, and exciting
By TeacherReader
I LOVED book one, The Eighth Day, but The Inquisitor's mark is even better!

After the all-out Eighth Day war in Mexico, Jax, Riley, and Evangeline have gone into hiding. There are still rogue Transitioners and evil Kin lords who want to use Riley, a descendant of King Arthur, and Evangeline, a powerful wizard with bloodlines to Merlin, to get control over the Eighth Day. So when Finn Ambrose, a mysterious stranger, contacts Jax claiming to be his uncle, Jax's defenses go up—especially when Finn tells Jax that he’s holding Jax's best friend, Billy, hostage.

The Inquisitor's Mark is an intense, action-packed fantasy set in a world where Arthurian descendants can enter a secret spell-created day between Wednesday and Thursday.

This one picks up right where The Eighth Day left off, and our characters need to find and protect one of Merlin's descendants, otherwise she will be murdered to destroy the people living in the 8th day.

The Inquisitor's Mark kept me glued to the page throughout. A new set of characters are developed as an enemy clan, and they are creepy and fun to read. I loved the addition of Dorian's perspective for helping us understand just how evil the Dulacs are and how hard it is to make the right decisions.

Salerni also used this book to develop her world even further. We meet magical creatures and explore fascinating time-and-space travel tunnels.

Second books often have a hard time living up to their counterparts, but I found this Book 2 to be even stronger than Book 1, even though Book 1 was a 5 star book for me. Salerni doesn't ease into the story like she did in The Eighth Day, she jumps straight in. The dialogue is more authentic, and the world was crafted more clearly.

Also, I love that this series is steering clear of annoying love triangles. Some twinges of romance exist in the background; as in, he has a crush on her... they're holding hands. As a result, this book focuses on plot and world development, with actual character development, rather than drowning in irritating romance.

If you're looking for a fun, addictive read, these books are highly recommended!

Awesome series!
By This Kid Reviews Books
Synopsis- Jax Aubrey is unique. He and his guardian Riley Pendare/Pendragon are Transitioners – people who are able to experience a special eighth day (nicknamed “Grunsday”) between Wednesday and Thursday, and have a family magic talent (Jax’s is inquisition, Riley has the voice of command, etc.). They are able to protect (and fight) the Kin – super-powerful magic people, all with different talents. Some Kin, like Evangeline, are good, while some Kin are evil and want the eighth day to be the only day.

All was going well, until Jax (who was in hiding)’s former best friend, Billy, was kidnapped because he knew Jax. Not only that, but he was kidnapped by Jax’s uncle. And Jax’s dad had told Jax that he had no other relatives, besides his mother’s cousin, so what is going on? When Jax is forced to join his family, and the evil Transitioners that they serve, he can’t believe it. They work for the enemy and they want Jax to join them. But, Jax is loyal to Riley and Evangeline.

What I Thought- This was a very thrilling book. It explains a lot about Jax, and Transitioners in general. There is a lot of mystique added to the plot and the characters. Jax, especially in this book, is a character you can care for. His family is working for the enemy, and they want Riley and Evangeline in their clutches. The story draws you in, and gets you asking questions. The story is appropriate for all ages, and the publisher rates it for ages 8+. But there is a lot going on in the plot that may make it a bit hard for younger readers. This is a great series, and I cannot wait for Book 3!

The key to ECG interpretation is pattern recognition, and pattern recognition is developed the same way as any skill—through repetition.

ECG Success illustrates the key features of dozens of arrhythmias and presents multiple practice strips to allow the student to learn the subtle findings that help distinguish one from another.
Organized by the seven categories of arrhythmias, ECG Success reviews the basics of ECGs (anatomy, physiology, electrophysiology, etc.), and provides a diverse group of strips for practice and testing pattern recognition. In addition, the book includes four practice tests, each with 75 randomized ECG strips, and a unit with more than ten case studies with multiple-choice questions and more ECG strips.

ECG Success covers all the information needed—anatomy and physiology, practice, case scenarios, and relevant emergency care—to help the reader feel competent and in control, whether faced with a nonthreatening ECG or an emergency situation.

As an RT student, I found this book to be very helpful with analyzing cardiac rhythms & has great pictures to go along with it. It was easy to read & didn't insult my intelligence.

By J. D. Christensen
I was very irritated by the inability to see an EKG preview when evaluating an EKG book. Often that sort of blocked preview hides a graphically inferior book. Having taken a chance and purchased the book, I can now say that the Rhythm strips are of good quality, show up well in the iPad using Kindle program, and the book navigates relatively well. Information is well organized.

Shortcomings: too few actual 12 leads. Most are in the formate of a single beat only. Part of what a beginner needs to see a lot is complete EKGs in their usual clinical format to really get comfortable with reading quickly.

Overall a good book. I will be using this resource to teach the residents (IM, FP and transitional) that rotate with us.

If this book does not look like your particular cup of tea, a good second choice is the ridiculously titled but readable "The Only EKG Book You'll Ever Need." I used that myself during residency some time ago and still lend mine out to residents on the service. It can quickly bring a resident with EKG deficiency up to speed.

The quizzes in this (the above) book and overall volume of information look better for purpose of more in depth teaching.

Good ECG book
By MRose
This is a decent ECG instruction book. The one complaint I have is that the rates in the answer key do not always match up with the rate-finding method that the book says you should use for a particular type of rhythm. Other than that, a clear and concise reference/workbook.

Amazon.com Review
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.

In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

From Library Journal
"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle." In today's service business, author Beckwith suggests this old marketing adage is likely to guarantee failure. In this timely addition to the management genre, Beckwith summarizes key points about selling services learned from experience with his own advertising and marketing firm and when he worked with Fortune 500 companies. The focus here is on the core of service marketing: improving the service, which no amount of clever marketing can make up for if not accomplished. Other key concepts emphasize listening to the customer, selling the long-term relationship, identifying what a business is really selling, recognizing clues about a business that may be conveyed to customers, focusing on the single most important message about the business, and other practical strategies relevant to any service business. Actor Jeffrey Jones's narration professionally conveys these excellent ideas appropriate for public libraries.?Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Advertising professional Beckwith startles and disarms all potential doubting Thomases with one fact--that by the year 2005, 8 out of 10 Americans will be working in a service business. Chapters here are remarkably short; they are intended to convey one point (summarized in one sentence in boldface italics) and are blessedly free of jargon. Hints and tips cover the conventional four Ps of marketing--product, promotion, place, and price--in an irreverent and iconoclastic manner; nothing is sacrosanct. Stories from every corner of life illustrate and drive home messages. In a quandary about pricing? Read the Picasso story to remember, "Don't charge by the hour; charge by the years." About the value of research? Forget questionnaires and focus groups; instead, ask individuals what improvements are needed--not the dreaded "What don't you like?" A very human, much-needed book to savor and be refreshed by. Barbara Jacobs

Digestible Insights
By Michael L. Perla
As others have written, this book is not about creating a complex marketing design or plan. What it does offer is quick, a page or so, USA today-like snippets of insightful observations about marketing in general, and service marketing in particular.
As the title indicates, selling and/or marketing an intangible service is a different process than tangible product marketing. As the author writes, most people cannot evaluate the skills of an accountant, or lawyer, or any number of professional services. We often look for tangible proxies that indicate the professional's level of expertise and success (e.g., fancy offices, degrees on the wall, presentation, etc.).
If you read this book in its entirety in one session, you are bound to remember nothing in the sea of facts and tidbits (click on the table of contents link to get a feel for the topic areas). I've found the best way to read the book is to ponder on a few points every night and/or week, while attempting to apply them to a salient situation in your life. Overall, this book has some interesting and useful insights, and is a good read when you have a few minutes to spare.

THE Marketing Book
By O. Halabieh
As Harvey Mackay notes on the cover "The one book on marketing I'd have if I could have just one. A CLASSIC." This books changes the way we think about marketing: "It begins with an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of services - their invisibility and intangibility - and of the unique nature of service prospects and users - their fear, their limited time, their sometimes illogical ways of making decisions, and their most important drives and needs". Harry then goes on to discuss a number of fundamental topics: surveying and research, planning, positioning and focus, pricing, branding, communicating and selling, nurturing and keeping clients etc.

Below are some excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

a) "Your opportunities for growth often lie outside the confines of your current industry description." - This can be reworded to apply to one's personal career

b) "In most professional services, you are not selling expertise - because your expertise is assumed, and because your prospect cannot intelligently evaluate your expertise anyway. Instead, you are selling a relationship. And in most cases, that is where you need the most work."

c) "First, accept the limitations of planning...Second, don't value planning for its result: the plan...Third, don't plan your future. Plan your people."

d) "Positioning (Al Ries and Jack Trout) says: 1) You must position yourself in your prospect's mind. 2) Your position should be singular: one simple message. 3) Your position must set you apart from your competitors. 4) You must sacrifice. You cannot be all things to all people; you must focus on one thing."

e) "To succeed spectacularly in a service business, you must get all your ducks in a row. Marketing is just one duck. But it is one very big duck."

f) "...And for marketing purposes - for the purpose of attracting and keeping business - a service is only what prospects and clients perceive it to be. So "get better reality": Improve your service quality. But never forget that the prospect and client must perceive that quality."

g) "Services are human. Their successes depend on the relationships of people...But you can spot some patterns in people. The more you can see the patterns and understand people, the more you will succeed - and this book as written with the hope that it will help you do just that."

h) "Nothing beats experience, of course, but reading books about others' experiences comes in a competent second. The risk in learning only from personal experience is that too often, we draw conclusions from too little data - we learn too much from too little. We also tend to credit our company's successes to everything that went into them...And so we keep repeating things that hurt our business."

One of the best features of the book is the way its written and structured. Each area is covered through small stories featuring numerous real-life examples. This makes the book very practical and enjoyable to read. All in all, a great book on Marketing and one that is recommended for anyone. We are all in some aspect a marketer of services.

As a final remark, you can follow the author Harry Beckwith's latest thoughts here: [...]

Worth the price for 1.5 pages rated below
By S. Hall
It's a good read, but there is a page and half that has had a major impact, showing me where I have a huge blindspot in business and how I stop my own progress. This page and a half is possibly the most important material I've read in a book in several years (for me it applies directly).

The author talks about the Fallacy of Planning in a business setting. He ranks plans in this order:

1. Very Good
2. Good
3. Best
4. Fair
5. Poor

Why is Good ahead of Best? Simple, to arrive at Best takes orders of magnitude more planning than Good. Also, who defines Best? How much time is spent creating the Best plan? Will Best stand the test of time? Can everyone agree on Best? Would Good work just as well as Best in the real world? Is Best satisfying the client's need better than a Good plan?

Choosing the "Best" plan leads to Paralysis by Analysis. Good plans allow for quick action and constant improvement. The most successful people in the world have acted on Good plans that they have refined over time. An actionable plan is more successful than a plan that never leaves the drawing board!

Personally, I've fallen into the Best trap many times. There is no such thing as a "Best" plan. Going forward the "Best" plan will be the "Good" plan that I can put into action and refine over time!

A lightbulb went off in my head when I got this concept. Thank you Harry for this valuable lesson.

A Capitalism for the People: Recapturing the Lost Genius of American Prosperity, by Luigi Zingales

When the Italian-born economist Luigi Zingales came to the United States in the 1980s, he embraced the American Dream: the belief that what brings you success is hard work, not luck or who you know. But the economic events of the past decade have put American capitalism in crisis. Now, living in America’s heartland, Zingales warns in A Capitalism for the People that the U.S. economy risks deteriorating into a pro-business rather than pro-market system run by corrupt politicians. Presenting a real-world blueprint to restore true competition to our economic system, Zingales gives hope that the U.S. can rebound to greatness.

Review
Futures Magazine
“Luigi Zingales lays out the glaring defects that have come to corrode our current economic system in a very easy to understand picture.... Recommended reading for those interested in the evolving nature of our interconnected system of government and the economy.”

Bloomberg View
“[F]ascinating.... Zingales provides an enormous service by laying out such persuasive evidence.”

National Review Online
“[A Capitalism for the People] is the book that hits closest to the mark on the question of where the American center-right ought to go in the next few years.”

Sacramento Bee
“Zingales offers more than rehashed Friedman or Hayek. It’s a book that should appeal to tea partyers and the Occupy Wall Street crowd.”

Publishers Weekly
“Zingales…presents a striking dichotomy.... Engaging.”

Financial Times
“Zingales’s fundamental diagnosis is right.... [T]his remains a stimulating essay on the nature of American capitalism and the issues that will determine the pace of America’s relative decline.”

Marginal Revolution, Tyler Cowen
“I know you have book fatigue, popular economics book fatigue, policy book fatigue, and books-with-subtitles-like-this fatigue, all at once. But this book is really, really good. It hits all the right notes, is clearly written, and refers to academics as the new crony capitalists. I agreed with almost all of it. If I had to pick out one book, of this entire lot of books, to explain what is going on right now to a popular audience of non-economists, this might well be it.”

J. Bradford DeLong, University of California, Berkeley
“More than 30 years ago, Milton and Rose Director Friedman raised high the banner of small-government free-market libertarianism with their Free to Choose. Now, a generation later, income inequality is substantially higher, the globe is even more interconnected, and our partial financial deregulation has backfired badly. Luigi Zingales thus has a harder task as he tries to update the small-government free-market libertarian position for the 21st century. But he has done a very good job at it.”

Robert J. Shiller, author of Finance and the Good Society

“This remarkably creative book, driven by a strong moral conviction, offers a bold array of ideas for us to ponder, so we can really make the American capitalist model work better for everyone.”

Edmund S. Phelps, Director, Center on Capitalism and Society, Columbia University
“In A Capitalism for the People, Luigi Zingales joins the small but influential group of economists who see that America’s economy is now more and more corporatist, less and less capitalist. His impressive account of our downhill slide is enriched by his deep knowledge of the harm wrought by the worst excesses of Italian crony capitalism. A must-read.”

Nell Minow, co-author of Corporate Governance and co-owner and board member of GMI Ratings
“An especially accessible and holistic assessment of what went wrong in our financial markets and an especially thoughtful and constructive proposal for the future.  Highly recommended!”

Paul Ryan, U.S. Congressman, Wisconsin
“In A Capitalism for the People, Luigi Zingales exposes the pernicious collusion of big business and big government – offering the sharp analytical perspective of a world-renowned economist and the unique personal perspective of an immigrant living the American Dream. This must-read for policymakers and citizens alike serves as a lucid call to action for rediscovering what makes America exceptional.”

N. Gregory Mankiw, Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics, Harvard University, and author of Principles of Economics

“A Capitalism for the People is a wise, deep, and timely book. With lively prose, Zingales diagnoses what is right and wrong with the U.S. economy. Whether your political sympathies lie with the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, or someplace in between, you will learn much about how we can best promote an economic future that works for all of us.”

The Economist

“[A]n elegy to the America (Zingles) found when he moved here 24 years ago.”

Washington Post
“[An] accessible and powerfully argued book.”

John R. Talbott, Huffington Post
“[O]utstanding.... I give the book my ultimate compliment; it is so full of new and innovative ideas that it makes you pause and think on every page.” National Review“[W]e are fortunate to have an Italian-born economist so powerfully and persuasively defending America’s once exceptional free-enterprise system.” Co.Exist, a blog of Fast Company “Zingales is readable, engaging, and full of insight. A Capitalism For The People is worth the time of anyone, left or right, who cares about the future of the American market system.”

Adam Ozimek, Modeled Behavior, a blog on Forbes.com
“[A Capitalism for the People is] unquestionably insightful and thought-provoking, and it has plenty of smart policy recommendations….I do strongly recommend A Capitalism for the People to anyone looking for a robust and pragmatic vision of free market economics directed at current problems.”

LA Progressive
“Zingales is excellent.”

Iain Martin, The Telegraph
“[A] brilliant and important new book.”

Mechanics Institute Library
“[Zingales] provides a forceful look at how pro-business forces overwhelmed the pro-market principles that made American capitalism great, and how we can get it back on track. This book should have a wide readership, from the Occupy Wall Street crowd to Tea Partyers.”

great book
By MxM
Luigi Zingales' book is fascinating. Once I started it, I could not put it away and finished it in two days. Zingales presents a clear, comprehensive (and scary) analysis of the unhealthy relationship that has developed in the US between big business and politics, and its nefarious effects on competition, incentives, the lives of ordinary people, and the American Dream.
Many blame "capitalism" for the financial crisis. Zingales argues and demonstrates that there is an enormous difference between "capitalism" and "the capitalists", and between "pro-market" and "pro-business" choices and policies. It is the capitalists and pro-business policies that are to blame, not capitalism. Pro-business choices have favored the incumbents (rich people). As a result, outsiders (ordinary people) have seen their opportunities reduced, their shot at the American dream denied. The book argues that we need to put a stop to the cozy relationship between politicians, Wall Street and big business. Zingales demonstrates (with logic and plenty of examples) that we need pro-market policies that foster competition and meritocracy, and which ultimately benefit ordinary people.
This is a great book. I strongly recommend it to anyone who cares about the future of America, from supporters of (true) capitalism to Occupy Wall Streeters.

Important work documenting the woes of crony capitalism
By DFechter
Suppose you learned that in 1998 Citicorp planned to merge with insurance company Travelers, despite the fact that such a merger was illegal under the Glass-Steagall Act, which blocked banks from owning businesses in other financial sectors such as investment banking and, yes, insurance. You might ask, why would Citicorp press on with the merger? Luigi Zingales, in his well-footnoted book, reports it was because they "had enough discussions [with the Fed and the Treasury] to believe this will not be a problem."

Suppose you also learned that Robert Rubin, then the Secretary of Treasury under President Bill Clinton, was lobbying for changes to the Act that would remove the restrictions on banks. (Such a bill passed in 1999 with a bipartisan majority of 343-86.)

You still might not find that too outrageous. There were, after all, reasonable arguments against the Glass-Steagall restrictions and even today there is controversy over their advantages and disadvantages.

But finally you learn that Rubin left his post at the Treasury Department exactly one day after the bill passed (he had actually resigned 6 weeks before) and just 108 days later he was hired by Citigroup (yes, the firm he had helped through his lobbying efforts to change Glass-Steagall) for a salary of $15 million a year and, as author Luigi Zingales points out, "without any operating responsibilities."

It was not, as Zingales points out, illegal. But was it right?

Consider it Exhibit A in the case Zingales makes against "crony capitalism," the unholy alliance of business and government. "Business" may be commonly perceived to be in the camp of the Republicans but, as Zingales shows, crony capitalism is perhaps the most successful ongoing bipartisan effort since the fabrication of the first pork barrel.

That is how we end up with Dwayne Andreas, once the CEO of food and commodities giant Archer Daniels Midland, buying Jimmy Carter's peanut warehouse and, a few years later, selling Bob Dole an apartment in Bal Harbor, Florida. (Andreas' Wikipedia page reports that he is "one of the most prominent political campaign donors in the United States, having contributed millions of dollars to Democratic and Republican candidates alike.")

Similar examples abound in Zingales' systematic documentation of how the US economy has gone from "pro-market" capitalism to "pro-business" cronyism. Our overly large federal government has spawned an explosion of lobbying, influence peddling and corruption. Zingales astutely points out that the "Occupy" and the "Tea Party" movements are actually aligned against the same opponent. The Occupiers may focus their wrath on business and the Tea Party on government, but to Zingales they are two sides of the same coin.

Zingales, a professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, is particularly sensitive about crony capitalism. He immigrated to the United States from Italy specifically to escape the corruption of the Italian system, in which getting ahead was a function of who you know and not what you know. Corruption is the norm. In an amusing but telling example Zingales says that if a mayor in Italy advised the citizens to tape their windows, as an American mayor did in advance of stormy weather, Zingales would have ignored the advice, assuming the mayor's brother was selling tape.

Zingales is a capitalist, a believer in the free market. In his view, however, many of the elements which enabled the free market to create so much wealth while generating so little resentment in the United States are shifting unfavorably. He highlights the undermining of support for the free-market system driven by increases in inequality for reasons other than meritocracy. As Zingales says, "the perception...that the system is rigged."

One manifestation of this "rigging" is the bailouts. Zingales devotes a chapter to detailing how the increasing involvement of the government in the economy, through spending and regulation, and the increasing coziness of government with the businesses it was ostensibly regulating, led almost naturally to the use of taxpayer money to bail out financial institutions in crisis. (And not just financial institutions, as evidenced by the multiple bailouts of the auto industry.) All of which is harmful both to popular support for what is called "the free market" as well as to the operation of the market itself.

Zingales is at his best documenting how we have gone astray. The book is filled with examples and anecdotes and supplemented by Zingales' insight as an economist, explaining exactly how these developments are harmful.

He provides several recommendations, which make up about half of the book. His proposals are a mix of traditional solutions, such as school vouchers to improve education and improvements in bankruptcy laws to restore the balance between borrowers and lenders, and some creative ideas such as "retooling vouchers" to reward schools based on their success in actually finding new jobs for the unemployed workers they train. He has a host of proposals designed to "promote" competition (such as "reinventing" antitrust to focus not on market power but on political power).

As a member of academia, Zingales believes business ethics should be featured more prominently in business schools. He would like to see opprobrium become the social norm for unethical business behavior as opposed to the current culture of turning a blind eye or even rewarding it.

Finally, Zingales desperately wants to reduce the influence of lobbying on the political and economic landscape. While he makes a convincing case that lobbying should be curtailed, his proposals do not inspire confidence. He calls for "public shaming" of companies which abuse lobbying. He believes in an increase in the use of class-action lawsuits. The reality is that as long as government remains large and intrusive, lobbying will be a problem. Reducing the size of government, and therefore reducing the rewards from lobbying, may be the best hope.

A brilliant and principled critique of the Left and Right, from the Libertarian Right
By Lawrence
Zingales is an Italian who loves the best part of America. He writes with authority (economist at the University of Chicago business school) about the great threat to America: A corruption of its core engine of prosperity -- a free market. That corruption comes not from Reds in high places: It comes from the collusion successful capitalists engage in with dependent politicians, producing a bevy of regulations that happen to protect the successful, and block the competitors. Zingales applies this analysis to a wide range of policies, but none as important as a causes of the collapse on Wall Street. Critically important and perfectly timed: Read and recommend this book!

This book helped me in the area of Housekeeping. This book allowed me to save $$$ for the chain hotel company that I work for because the book taught me to apply the "devil is in the details and success is in the systems" theory.
