An Emotional, Suspenseful, Brilliant Novel

The Lost Girls is an emotional roller-coaster of a book. I winced, I laughed, I smiled and I cried my eyes out. The plot is suspenseful, scary, harrowing and exciting. Mostly though, it is smart. While I read it, I kept thinking, "My goodness, the research this author must do to make a story so smart, so complex, so accurate." The details are intricate; there is never "just a story."

Besides the very smart and well-written plot, there are the emotional scenes, the gripping and well-developed characters, and the usual ambiguous feelings of wanting to finish it but not wanting it to be over. I hope the Lucy/Sean books are never over because I love these characters and having read all the books since Lucy was introduced back before her series, I feel like I've watched her grow up. Sean is my favorite character but I do love all the supporting characters. How I would love to be a Rogen or Kincaid or both.

Time felt like it dragged until this latest book by Allison Brennan was released and now, I've already finished it and have to wait months for the next one. At this point, I don't start to read an Allison Brennan book expecting to do anything but love it but I am still surprised each time by how much I love each book, how each manages to be even better than the last.

Another great read by Brennan

All the Lucy Kincaid novels are wonderfully wicked fast paced stories that never fail to engross and entertain the reader. I would suggest starting with the first Lucy Kincaid novel so you can follow the rich development of all the many fascinating characters that abound in these stories. Ms. Brennan has woven a wonderful tapestry between the Kincaid and Rogan clans that will have you turning pages until the wee hours of the night as both families fight against some of the world's worst deviants who prey on those unable to protect themselves. The subject matter can be horrific and appalling and take you places you'll wish you never knew about but interwoven with amazing characters so deeply concerned and committed to love and justice and each other that you'll be spellbound and always wanting more. Give this author a read and you'll find yourself going back for more! This voracious reader has already purchased the next book in this series due out next year.

Once again I knew I wouldn't be able to start this book without reading entirely at one time. Love, love this group of characters and their relationship to each other. Love Lucy and her strength . It was non stop movement from beginning to end. Wish I had the words Mrs. Brennan does to explain how much I enjoy reading her books. I know there are truly evil people in this world but there are also truly good and wonderful people to balance that evil. We all have strength we don't realize we have. Mrs Brennan shows this in her books which makes me return to read when she writes.

Amazing introduction to middle earth role-playing

This was one of the first role playing games I ever played, and it's still one of my favorites. The artwork and descriptions are outstanding, and though it is not slavishly adherent to LotR "canon" I agree that it reflects Tolkien's vision. It reminds me a lot of the Hobbit!

It's a good book.

Even though the "extensive research" put into this game is not as detailed as I would have liked, and many Tolkien enthusiasts would call this a sacriligeous butchering of Middle Earth, I enjoyed it immensely and thought it was true to his vision.

About the Author
Samuel L. Odom, PhD, is Director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) and Professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has published over 100 journal articles and seven books on early childhood intervention and developmental disabilities. Dr. Odom's research interests include preschool prevention and school readiness, effectiveness of programs for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders, and early intervention for infants and toddlers with or at risk for disability. He is a recipient of the Special Education Research Award from the Council for Exceptional Children.

Elizabeth P. Pungello, PhD, is a Scientist at FPG, a Research Associate Professor in the Developmental Psychology Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Mentor Faculty member at the Center for Developmental Science. Her research focuses on closing the achievement gap between at-risk and other children. She helps lead the FPG Infant/Toddler Child Care Initiative in the development and evaluation of a model of high-quality center care for infants and toddlers raised in poverty.

Nicole Gardner-Neblett, PhD, is an Investigator at FPG at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her main focus is the FPG Infant/Toddler Child Care Initiative, where she works to design and implement a model for infant/toddler care to promote the early learning, development, and health of children living in poverty. Her principal research interests are the effects of parenting practices and the classroom context on children's language and literacy development.

Good content, but reader-unfriendly binding

Good: The content is good and the paper is of high quality.

BAD: There is no way to open the book flat (not even close). Two hands plus a deliberate effort are required to keep the book open. This is not a subtle problem. Luckily, there are few photos that span both pages; those that do are mismatched in the middle as no offset from the center has been applied (I don't understand why publishers keep doing this year after year). I don't know if the book could be broken apart and then custom bound, as the inner margins are small.

This book is an excellent purchase for anyone learning German. I am a visual learner and this book really helped me learn grammar because I could visually see the picture with the words I was learning. The book has many photos and use a wide variety of colors. Seeing the images also allows you to know you're using the correct noun when your trying to write a sentence in German. If I learn a third language I will be ordering the book for that language from this company.

This is the Coolest Book Ever for this German-Learner

I am learning German using Rosetta Stone Version 3: German Level 1, 2 & 3 Set with Audio Companion and so total immersion and learning via images and photos works for me. When I started to realize that I needed way more vocabulary than Rosetta Stone was offering me as I visited Berlin, Germany, I remembered that DK offered some awesome visual dictionaries. So, I checked Amazon to see if they have any foreign language visual dictionaries and they have this one and it is completely comprehensive and includes just about every single photo/German word association imaginable, including technical words. It is amazing to just page through and also amusing to see how literal German is, the way they have made a very literal language work in the modern world with modern things.

About the Author
William McCants directs the project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World at the Brookings Institution. He is adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University and a former U.S. State Department senior adviser for countering violent extremism. McCants has a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and lives in the Washington, D.C. area.

Will McCants writes with expertise and aplomb about the Islamic State, its history, and the foundations of its efforts at regional dominance. While, some of the zig-zagging back and forth in time requires a bit of gymnastics from the reader, the book is both educational and entertaining. Anyone interested in learning about this organization from a truly qualified scholar would benefit from a read of this book.

Dr. McCants proclaims himself, rightly, as a guide, proficient in Islamic theology and history, modern jihadism, clandestine bureaucracies, and Arabic. The good doctor flexes his linguist muscles with translations of original Arabic texts, providing crucial context to the situations he describes.

The book covers the history of the organization, beginning with distinctions between Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State; such as, AQ wanted to build popular support for caliphate, but IS wanted to impose a caliphate, regardless of the acquiescence of the masses. The book details Zarqawi’s rise to prominence and obsession with Nur al-Din and Saladin. Zarqawi linked his organization in Iraq to AQ [forming Al-Qaeda in/of Iraq (AQI)] but his brutality drew censure from Al-Qaeda Central. Once Zarqawi was killed and al-Baghdadi became commander of the faithful, AQI dissolved and was absorbed into IS with Masri as minister of war.

From there the book focuses attention on the Islamic State’s flag symbolism and parallels with historical references to the Abbasids. After Masri and Baghdadi killed in 2010, the focus shifted yet again. The group floundered until the Americans left and the Arab Spring happened. The next section details the beginning of the online presence through magazines and Twitter. Cautionary tales and lessons learned by the IS are presented in the rise and fall of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), as well as failure to govern by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb (AQIM) and Ash-Shabab (Somalia’s offshoot of violent jihadism). The book turns to the unlikely rise of Baghdadi and details sectarian divides, apocalyptic guidance, and the seizure of Mosul, while detailing some distinctions between the Abassid dynasty and IS.

Dr. McCants concludes noting many of the contradictions make the group hard to explain, noting that IS is “too entrenched for quick solutions.”
The group does not rely on outside funding. McCants believes that airstrikes can degrade, but not destroy, the organization. The only way to damage the Islamic State is to hurt its “ability to endure and expand,” thereby eroding its legitimacy. Sectarian governments must give way to true representation, meaning that Shia governments have to accommodate Sunnis. Noting that Iranian support for Shia militias probably means less attention is required from Coalition partners for those militias, freeing them to focus on Sunni efforts at countering the IS.

The endnotes show the level of research that went into the work. While the index makes the work more approachable to those without time to read the entire book.

The Rise and Fall of the ISIS Apocalypse

If you are interested in understanding ISIS and its underlying apocalyptic vision for the Middle East then look no further. William McCants in, The ISIS Apocalypse: The History, Strategy, and Doomsday Vision of the Islamic State takes you on a bloody and violent tour of this doomsday cult in the words and writings of their leaders.

To be sure this was not what I would call a fun read, in fact the history of ISIS reads more like a real life horror story on the scale of the French Revolution or Nazi Germany but nevertheless I believe it is history which anyone interested in the subject would be well served in pursuing.

The Spanish poet and philosopher George Santayana wisely observed that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” There is no doubt in my mind that ISIS and its brutal doomsday apocalysm will go the way of other such abominable regimes but the question is what will we take away from this tragedy so that future generations do not have to experience this terror? That's the real value in reading this book in my opinion.

Key insights into how IS sees the world

This is a difficult book to review on Amazon.com, because reviews containing the sorts of words and names that would normally be used to describe the contents of this book get filtered out as potentially objectionable content.

The current refugee crisis is just one of the devastating effects of the IS. The typical Westerner has absolutely no idea how the leaders of IS think or what motivates them. In order to resist IS, it is necessary to understand their history and their apocalyptic worldview and strategy.

This book provides many useful historical insights, some of which are based on the author's interpretation of a surprising array of correspondence between the leaders of the IS movement and the leaders of that well-known organisation based in Afghanistan, whose leader met his demise at the hands of Seal Team Six.

The book does not provide a handy plan for defeating IS, but it does help the reader understand where IS leaders think the world is heading, and how they are likely to respond to different types of provocation.

OMG. I honestly thought I loved Freeing Alex, but when I started reading Loving Alex, I was hooked from the first page. This storyline continues where book 1 ended, but this shows a stronger willed, determined Alex with a white knight in shining armor, James at her side. Every women needs a man like James (tall,dark and handsome).
Loving Alex introduces us to Alex's dad and is very family oriented. They have her back, giving her the extra strength she needs.
There are twists in this book that I didn't see coming, but add strength to the book and its a happy feeling to see the difference from Freeing Alex to Loving Alex.
The things James can do with Strawberries are truly amazing and so loving, you just want the book to go on and continue forever. I honestly can't wait for book 3, Eternally Alex, to see what happens next.
My drink of choice in this book has got to stay with Champagne and strawberries but, like the Arconi Angels, I will add the strawberry bellini :-)

Spectacular Sequel

Loving Alex is the sequel to Freeing Alex by Sarah Elizabeth Ashley. Ashley does a great job transitioning into this second book which starts off right where the first ended. Alex Drake continues to make a space in our hearts and learns how to fight. Empowerment and change seems to be the energy layered into Alex and her journey in this story. There were some moments where I questioned what she was doing but then realized I would probably do the same in her shoes. Sarah Elizabeth Ashley has created characters and a story that will leave a lasting impression. In addition to memorable Alex, there is James, who is so amazingly hot there are not enough words to describe how great he is! James made me want eat strawberries and drink champagne every night just to feel like I am a part of their romance.
Don’t think for a second this is just a love story, there is suspense and are twists that will leave you shocked. If you have not added this author to your Goodreads page, do so now, you will not want to miss anything she puts out.

Loving Alex

Excellent follow up to Freeing Alex! Again Sarah has nailed the feeling, emotions and mindset of a DV survivor. I absolutely loved James and his protectiveness! James is too good to be true and is perfect for Alex! This story has twists and turns that weren't expected. The book drew me in completely as all of these characters and plots are very realistic. There were still typos and grammatical errors that detracted from the story and that is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. I would recommend this book and can't wait for the next in the series.
